We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Maternity Support Worker (MSW) to join our dynamic maternity team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity to support the delivery of high-quality, safe, and personalised care to women, their babies, and families within a hospital ward-based setting. You will work collaboratively under the direction of registered midwives as part of a multidisciplinary team.
As a Maternity Support Worker, you will play a key role in assisting with the planning, implementation and evaluation of maternity care under minimal supervision. You will work flexibly across a range of shifts, including weekends and nights, to ensure the needs of our women and babies are met.
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about women-centred care and who is committed to delivering compassionate, respectful, and high-quality maternity services.
Main duties of the job
Provide direct care and support to women, their partners and babies across various maternity wards
Carry out delegated clinical tasks including maternal and neonatal observations, venepuncture, urinalysis, and assisting with feeding and hygiene
Support with admissions, discharges, and general ward duties such as stock management and clerical tasks
Promote infant feeding, breastfeeding support, and parental education
Work in close collaboration with midwives, doctors, neonatal staff and other healthcare professionals
Maintain accurate and confidential documentation and data entry on maternity IT systems
Participate in health promotion activities including smoking cessation and newborn safety
Provide emotional support, reassurance, and advocacy for women and families

Job responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include both clinical and administrative tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with wound care, obtaining diagnostic specimens, supporting feeding choices, and ensuring the smooth running of ward areas. You'll be expected to demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and time-management skills, with the ability to adapt to the emotional and physical demands of a maternity setting.
You'll also have a role in mentoring junior support workers and student midwives, helping to foster a positive, respectful, and team-oriented working environment. A commitment to safeguarding, infection control, and health and safety protocols is essential.
