Overview
We are recruiting for a band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Paediatric Critical Care team at the Royal London Hospital. The unit provides high quality and professional care for children and their families within a tertiary paediatric critical care setting.
We are a tertiary referral centre accepting admissions from north east London and beyond to support the increasing demand for Paediatric critical care. Our unit consists of 10 beds and cares for a mix of intensive care and highly dependent babies, children and young people. As a major trauma centre we care for children aged 0-16 years and handle emergency and elective surgical admissions to provide varied experience.

Main duties
The postholder will lead by example as an expert specialist nurse and provide clinical, organizational and professional leadership to the nursing team. As an expert practitioner in Paediatric Intensive Care, the post holder will be responsible for setting and maintaining a high standard of nursing care to children and their families, and for delivering high standards of clinical care at unit level.

Job responsibilities
* Demonstrate specialist knowledge, skills and expertise in clinical practice.
* Ensure the nursing process is developed to meet the individual needs of each patient, with well-documented assessment, care planning and evaluation.
* Accurately interpret clinical information about the child’s condition, instigating appropriate remedial action and promptly reporting changes.
* Provide technically skilled nursing care that is sensitive, relevant and responsive to the needs of the child/young person in liaison with their parent/carers.
* Provide leadership and management to the staff team at all times, ensuring effective use of human resources on the ward to deliver a safe and efficient service.
* Review staffing levels and patient dependency to assist the Lead Nurse with resource planning within the service.
* Ensure a child and family-centred approach to care in inpatient areas, considering medical, psychological, emotional and social needs.
* Seek and consider the views of children and families in decision making, acting as an advocate for vulnerable children with complex needs.
Person specification
Qualifications (Essential):
* RSCN / RN Child with current NMC registration
* Educated to degree level or working towards
* Paediatric Intensive Care Course/415 or equivalent
* Preparation for Mentorship course or equivalent
* Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable:
* Leadership course / development programme
Experience (Essential):
* 18 months experience at band 6 within Paediatric Critical Care
* Experience of working within a Level 3 Unit
Knowledge (Essential):
* Understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating
* Encourages effective participation of all involved
* Proactive in seeking different communication styles to support longer term needs
* Provides feedback on communication
Knowledge (Desirable):
* Recognises and addresses barriers to effective communication
