Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Minor Injuries Unit in Horsham to work as a motivating Band 7 Emergency Nurse Practitioner/Emergency Care Practitioner (ENP/ECP) to provide Clinical and Professional Leadership, ensuring effective governance for staff working in allocated area or service. This vacancy is a permanent role for 22.5 hours per week. The post holder will be accountable for the direct delivery of care to patients attending the Minor Injuries Unit, including assessing, requesting and interpreting diagnostic radiographs, diagnosing, treating and discharging or referring to other professionals. The post holder will ensure staff are clinically competent, services are clinically effective and safe, and an excellent patient experience is delivered. The role supports interdisciplinary working, competency frameworks, audits, research as appropriate, and alignment with Trust transformation programmes and the SCFT Clinical Strategy. The post involves developing partnerships for effective whole-system working and working across professional boundaries, and acting as an Autonomous Practitioner providing complete care packages to patients in minor injuries and minor medical conditions.


Communication and working relationships

* Leads and liaises with the multi-professional team within the organisation and with external stakeholders to ensure care is delivered effectively and efficiently; involves others in communications with patients and families; maintains accurate nursing records.
* Provides and receives complex information where persuasive, reassurance and empathetic skills are required and where there are barriers to understanding.
* Involves patients, relatives and carers in treatment; supports discharge planning; ensures high standards of written and verbal advice are available to patients, relatives and carers.
* Disseminates information to all staff (e.g., Team briefs, Unit meetings).
* Accesses regular supervision in line with Trust policy; conducts supervision and appraisals for other team members.


Key responsibilities

* Maintain high standards of nursing care; leads and participates in Nursing and clinical audits in the Unit, collecting and collating information as required.
* Apply local standards and policies that support patient-centred, evidence-based care; in conjunction with other ENPs, undertake an annual training needs analysis and communicate to the Clinical Lead.
* Promote evidence-based innovative practice in nursing care and support implementation of changes to improve care.
* Ensure medical and emergency equipment is safe, regularly checked and ready for use; report or replace faulty equipment as necessary.
* Manage the care strategy and philosophy through leadership and supportive managerial skills, striving for high standards of care.
* Contribute to the development of the Minor Injuries Unit and its education and training needs; act as pro-active role model for clinical, educational and management quality standards and nurse leadership.


Main tasks

* Exercise judgment in identifying, assessing and interpreting complicated conditions and planning treatment and discharge for patients with minor concerns.
* Plan and organise activities within the unit to meet service demand, including allocation and re-allocation of staff to ensure clinical safety and timely discharge.
* Ensure all staff, including temporary staff and students, are aware of emergency procedures.
* Lead the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care in the unit in accordance with Trust ENP Guidelines and departmental protocols prior to discharge or transfer.
* Assist in planning duty rotas to meet clinical area requirements, considering skill mix, acuity and dependency.
* Maintain a safe environment for patients, relatives, carers and staff in line with Risk Management policies and procedures.
* Be familiar with the Major Incident Policy and assist as directed within that plan if needed.
* Provide professional leadership and supervision to staff within own discipline and facilitate professional leadership across other disciplines.
* Model professional conduct, manage difficult or complex situations with care and compassion, and uphold Trust values at all times.
