Overview

Assist the pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in the provision of the broad range of pharmacy technical services across the Trust, working on your own initiative but referring to a supervisor (pharmacy technician or pharmacist) when necessary. Support the provision of extended hours service. Assistant Technical Officers are expected to expand and broaden their skills and abilities while operating at all times under the direct supervision of a qualified Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist unless operating according to agreed procedures approved by the Director of Pharmacy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Dispensing Assistant to work within the pharmacy departments at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, with main duties including the labelling and dispensing of medicines under supervision to patients. This role will be based in the pharmacy departments at New Cross, Wolverhampton and Cannock Chase Hospital.


Responsibilities

* Carry out the labelling and dispensing of medicines under the supervision of a pharmacy technician or pharmacist to patients.
* Carry out routine supply of medicines under supervision, including inpatient dispensing, controlled drugs dispensing, recycling and returning medicines no longer needed.
* Receive prescriptions, label and dispense routine items for inpatients and outpatients, seeking advice from senior staff when appropriate.
* Dispense and self-check medications manually and with a computerised automated dispensing system using barcode technology and scanners.
* Dispense non-routine medicines (e.g., complex prescriptions and compliance aid boxes) under direct supervision of a pharmacy technician.
* Operate within local standard operating procedures relevant to the area of work.
* Assist with reception duties, pharmacy reception tasks, and entering details onto the pharmacy tracker system; undertake filing, photocopying and scanning as required.
* Manage stock: fill bottles, bags, tops and sundry items; check expiry dates and rotate stock; store stock correctly.
* Handle routine enquiries by telephone and refer non-routine matters to designated personnel.
* Maintain records for unlicensed and named patient medicines within pharmacy, and for controlled drugs for stock on wards and TTOs (to take) as required by legal documentation.
* Maintain accurate records of prescription pads and issue FP10 and internal prescriptions to assigned areas.
* Adhere to local and national standards, including evidence of training, competency development, and continuous professional development.
* Participate in education and training programmes and the in-house ATO training programme, passing competencies within each area of the dispensary.
* Demonstrate appropriate tasks to unqualified and support staff as requested.


Qualifications and Skills

* Must hold, be working towards, or be willing to work towards a level 2 NVQ in Pharmacy Services Skills and the underpinning knowledge.
* Four GCSEs, including Maths, English and a Science subject are essential.
* Experience in hospital pharmacy is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.
* Good communication and organisational skills; flexibility and ability to work well under pressure.


Working Arrangements and Requirements

* To participate in extended hours of service, including evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and bank holidays according to formal rota arrangements.
* To participate in education and training programmes and ensure accurate records of Continuous Professional Development.
* To maintain safe working practices and comply with General Pharmaceutical Council’s Code of Professional Ethics for technical staff; follow Medicines Act, Trust policies and procedures; and applicable Health and Safety Regulations.
* To safeguard patient confidentiality and maintain clean, tidy department environments.
