About The Role
The Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex invites applications for a researcher position on a Horizon Europe‑funded project titled Past and Current Transitions: A new pact for fair and resilient European regions (PACT). The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of Dr Carolin Ioramashvili, Professor Maria Savona and Professor Daniele Rotolo.
The project examines the social and economic consequences of the “twin transition” toward digitalisation and green transformation in European regions, combining quantitative and qualitative methods across a historical and contemporary study.
Responsibilities
* Study historical shocks to regional economies, including effects of technological change and global trade.
* Analyse business and employee data to trace the economic impacts of shocks, using causal inference methods to assess effects on productivity, employment and labour mobility.
* Process large‑scale textual data with Natural Language Processing (NLP) to identify policy actions and responses.
* Contribute to writing academic papers, reports and short outputs such as blog posts.
* Collaborate with international partners from leading European universities and research institutions.
Qualifications
* PhD (or final stages of a PhD) in economics, innovation studies, economic geography or a closely related field.
* Strong quantitative skills and experience combining statistical methods with qualitative research.
* Experience working with large, business‑level datasets and analysing industry and employment structures.
* Proficiency in NLP techniques for large‑scale text corpora, including entity and relation extraction.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to manage own workload while supporting colleagues.
Eligibility & Compensation
The role is open to UK citizens and eligible non‑UK nationals. Successful candidates will be considered for Skilled Worker Sponsorship under the UK immigration rules, provided the position is full‑time and appointed at Grade 7.4.
