Job title: Saturday Club. Project Coordinator
Start date: January 2026
Terms: A fixed-term freelance contract comprising 38 days per year, part-time.
Hours: 10am 1pm. Saturday
Fee: £33 per hour.
Location: Storyopolis is based at Volcano Theatre on Swanseas High Street.
Outline of the role
Collaborating closely with Project Directors Tim Batcup and Laura Webb, and our Creative Facilitator, your role will be to lead on the administration and coordination of Storyopolis broad-ranging programme of literacy-based activities delivered at our Saturday Club. You will have the opportunity to shape the direction of this innovative project so that it continues to benefit Swanseas most in-need children and young people into the future.
About Storyopolis
Storyopolis is a childrens literacy project with a difference. A vibrant, city centre-based initiative, Storyopolis provides an innovative framework for schools and families from areas of socioeconomic and cultural deprivation to engage with high quality activities that build the confidence, communication skills and creativity of children and young people, empowering them to make their voices heard in the world.
We collaborate with a wide range of artists and organisations, seeing literacy as a very broad church. We have worked with Rufus Mufasa, Cynan Jones, Swansea Comic Collective and Helen and Thomas Docherty, amongst others, and previous activities have included book-writing, illustration, performance poetry, scriptwriting, rap, journalism and flash-fiction. We believe that the more ways in which we can approach literacy, the greater the potential for us to meet the diverse needs of the children who take part and to enable them to develop their own unique creative voices.
Originally a cornerstone project of Volcano Theatre and Coastal Housings Arts Council of Wales-funded From the Station to the Sea programme, Storyopolis has now received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to deliver our Saturday Club for another 3 years. Starting in January 2026, this phase will consolidate and build on previous years, developing how Storyopolis delivers its remit, expanding its network of collaborators and providing high quality experiences to young people.
Saturday Club takes place every week in term time from 10:30 12:30 for young people aged 8-14. Sessions are led by a creative facilitator and there is no need for parents to stay, allowing attendees freedom and independence and affording parents two hours of free childcare. We provide a range of breakfast-style snacks porridge pots, fresh fruit etc thereby offering a breakfast-club provision. Each half-term block will feature a session from a guest artist from the local community who will lead creative activity around either a specific skill or a specific culture or cultural event such as Chinese New Year, Eid, Diwali etc, drawing on the skills, experiences and diversity of our local community. The remainder of each half-term will be focussed on the topic/skill shared, alongside less-structured literacy activities, including board games, open access to our on-site library and our extensive arts and creative materials.
