Overview
Nature's multimedia team creates podcasts and videos that contextualize the latest advances in science - especially those published in Nature - for working scientists and the general public. In this 12 month fixed term role, you will have particular responsibility for managing vertical social video, while also supporting the multimedia and digital teams more broadly in producing audio and video content across multiple platforms.
Responsibilities
* Commission and produce editorial videos and podcasts for Nature Magazine, with a specific responsibility for managing social vertical video. Specifically this will include:
* Filming and editing video, with a focus on vertical video - primarily TikTok, Facebook and Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts
* Playing an active role in discussions on commissioning, taking part in brainstorms and idea generation, with a focus on the content that will be of most interest and relevance to Nature's existing and potential audience
* Innovating different types of content to reach new audiences on social media
* Script writing and editing; story development
* Camera and sound operating
* Equipment management
* Stock image/footage/audio research
* Publishing management, i.e. video upload and compression/formatting, metadata, obtaining correct permissions
* Helping to manage the Nature Video YouTube channel
* Audio production where necessary to support the team's audio output
Essential
* Experience in science communication, video production or journalism. A keen understanding of how to create video for social media e.g. TikTok, Reels for Instagram and Facebook, X, YouTube
* A demonstrable portfolio of communicating science to a non-specialist audience, factual video production and social video production. Your portfolio should include examples of science writing, video editing and ideally narration or presenting.
* Extensive experience operating a camera including: shooting talking heads, action sequences and B-roll; manual camera operation; uploading/importing footage to editing software
* Mac literate
* Experience of video compression and format conversion
* Extensive experience of video editing with Final Cut ProX and Adobe Premiere Pro
* Audio editing with Adobe Audition or equivalent software
Desirable
* Bachelor's science degree
* Postgraduate science communication qualifications, journalism training or qualifications
* Experience of news reporting/researching
