Join Northumbria Police as a Resource Controller – Be at the Heart of Emergency Response

The role

Here at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! It takes a great deal of people from different backgrounds, with diverse skills and experience to serve our force area effectively, think you have what it takes to help us make a difference? This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Communications Department as a Resource Controller.

Ever wondered what it’s like to be at the heart of critical decision-making during emergency situations? As a Resource Controller, you’ll play a pivotal role in managing demand and deploying resources where they’re needed most. Your actions will directly impact public safety and officer support, making this a truly rewarding and high-impact position.

You will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team alongside our Contact Handlers and Force Incident Managers. Every shift brings new challenges as you assess and respond to threat, harm, risk, and vulnerability. This role demands leadership, resilience, and quick thinking – qualities that will help you thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where your contribution truly matters.

What you’ll do

Resource Controllers identify and allocate appropriate resources to incidents, manage multiple incidents simultaneously, respond to officer needs and requests, and monitor open incidents.

* Incident Management: Evaluate and task police resources using force IT systems and THRIVE assessment. Prioritise incidents, offer safeguarding advice, and monitor critical and major incidents. Maintain contact with supervision and officers, updating logs to ensure quality service.
* Information Updates: Monitor assigned radio channels, providing information or assistance to officers and front-line staff, responding immediately to calls for assistance. Upon obtaining incident updates you will update local and national computer systems relating to the incident or operational needs.
* Data Processing: You must be able to quickly process large amounts of information from various sources, including radio transmissions, telephone calls, and databases, and then task and direct resources effectively and efficiently.
* Resilience: The role of a Resource Controller is unique and demands resilience, patience, an open mind, and a positive attitude. However, it offers the opportunity to work in a supportive environment where you’ll receive the right training to ensure you have everything you need to excel.
* Stakeholder Management: You will work with a range of stakeholders both internal and external including other emergency services, partner organisations and Communications Centre and operational supervisory officers.

As a Resource Controller with Northumbria Police, you’ll be part of a vital team working a shift pattern that spans all 365 days of the year. While the role is subject to operational demand, we’re committed to offering flexibility where possible – helping you achieve a healthy work‑life balance while supporting frontline policing.

If you have questions about how the role can work for you or what support we can provide, please come and ask us. We’d love to give you a true account of a day in the life of a Resource Controller and discuss the support available to meet individual needs.

What you’ll bring

* Teamwork: You will be able to work in a team and independently to meet agreed objectives.
* Identify Risk: You will be able to identify risk and take the appropriate action for this.
* Communication: You will have excellent written communication and listening skills, able to effectively deal with distressed/vulnerable callers. You will be able to use them to influence decision making and communicate clearly, concisely, and dynamically at all levels.
* Planning and Organisation: Able to prioritise and plan workloads, you will be working in a multitasking environment, working under pressure and against deadlines.
* Problem Solving: Ability to review and break down problems into component parts and apply a problem‑solving rationale, comprehending and analysing large amounts of information to make appropriate decisions.
* Continuous Professional Development: Completion of in‑house departmental training and maintain knowledge through in‑house CPD in line with policy changes.

We know it’s important for you to feel that you’re not only part of a great team, but part of a community. We welcome applications from suitably qualified people from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

Harnessing these differences creates a productive environment in which everyone feels valued, and their talents are fully utilised. Appointments are based on merit alone.
