Based in Liverpool (may include the occasional international travel)

The Clinical Sciences Department at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is seeking to appoint a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the UKRI-funded INTERCEPT project: INTerrupting prolifERation of Carbapenem resistance in Indonesia: clinical and genomic Evaluation of Pathways of Transmission. INTERCEPT aims to understand transmission of carbapenem resistance at the level of the health system, the individual, the cell, and intracellularly. The successful candidate will plan and undertake bioinformatic and epidemiological analyses to investigate routes of bacterial transmission in Indonesia, working with genomic, clinical, and epidemiological datasets.

The successful candidate will play a central role in planning and conducting bioinformatic and epidemiological analyses to investigate routes of bacterial transmission. The post holder will work with large-scale genomic and clinical datasets, applying analytical approaches to characterise patterns of antimicrobial resistance and transmission dynamics across healthcare and community settings. The post holder will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the UK and Indonesia and contribute to data analysis, interpretation, scientific publications, and dissemination activities.


Key Responsibilities


Support the delivery of the research project’s analysis

* Design and carry out bioinformatic analyses using whole-genome sequence and post-enrichment metagenomic data
* Design and carry out analyses on clinical and epidemiologic data and link to bioinformatic findings
* Work with interdisciplinary collaborators to interrogate and enhance findings from analyses
* Work collaboratively with project team, including contributing to planning of project wet-lab experiments


Support dissemination of project outputs

* Draft and revise manuscripts describing research findings and publish in high-impact journals
* Present findings at national and international conferences


Support Other Project Activities Including Mentoring And Supervision

* Actively participate in planning of research group activities including grant writing
* Mentor development of junior team members and train research team members in analysis techniques where necessary
* Represent the group at relevant LSTM committees


Ideally You Will Demonstrate

* PhD in a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, genomics, mathematics or statistics with application to genomics/infection)
* Experience of planning and conducting bioinformatic experiments and analyses
* Experience of up-to-date analysis techniques for bacterial genomic data
* Evidence of dissemination of research findings in high-impact journals and conferences
* Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary projects
* Experience of developing and fitting statistical transmission models (desirable)
* Up-to-date knowledge of bacterial antimicrobial resistance (desirable)
