Overview
Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry – The post-holder will provide specialist clinical and professional skills of a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist. The post is based at the Caird House site in Hamilton as part of the Forensic Community Mental Health Team for Lanarkshire, providing Responsible Medical Officer input to community outpatients in Lanarkshire. There is flexibility as to which area of Lanarkshire the post-holder would cover. There will be 2 sessions of psychiatric input to HMP Shotts as part of the post’s requirements, as well as shared involvement in cover of the court liaison service. The NHS Lanarkshire forensic service is an innovative one which employs the recovery model. The team includes medical staff, nursing staff, psychologists, occupational therapists, mental health support workers and administrative staff. The service embraces the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, with ongoing work nationally and internationally recognised.
Occasional input may also be required to be provided at the University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Hairmyres psychiatric units on an ad hoc basis for patients under the care of the Forensic Community Mental Health Service. The job plan provides time for non-clinical based activities, as well as CPD, research, and audit. There are regular and frequent opportunities for involvement in the supervision and teaching of medical students and junior medical staff.
Responsibilities
* Provide specialist clinical and professional services as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist.
* Based at Caird House, Hamilton, with Responsible Medical Officer input to community outpatients in Lanarkshire; participate in up to 2 sessions of psychiatric input to HMP Shotts and share involvement in court liaison service coverage.
* Contribute to an innovative forensic service that uses the recovery model and includes a multidisciplinary team (medical, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, mental health support workers, and administrative staff).
* Participate in activities aligned with the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and related national/international initiatives.
* Provide occasional input at University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Hairmyres as required for patients under the care of the Forensic Community Mental Health Service.
* Engage in non-clinical activities, CPD, research, and audit as part of the job plan; support supervision and teaching of medical students and junior medical staff.
* Consider less than full-time working or compressed hours as a possible arrangement.
Qualifications and Experience
* Specialist clinical and professional skills of a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist.
* Experience in community-based forensic psychiatry and liaison with court services is desirable.
