Clerk to Governors for Symphony Learning Trust Schools

We are looking for Clerk to Governors to join our Trust. Experience is preferred but if you have relevant administrative experience, particularly around coordinating meetings, circulating agendas and producing accurate minutes, then training and development could be provided.

Job Title: Clerk to Governors for Symphony Learning Trust Schools

Hourly rate:

3. Pay point 31 - £22.72 per hour (experienced clerks)
4. Pay point 27 - £20.69 per hour (trainee clerks)
5. Plus holiday pay - pay award pending 01/04/2026

Responsible To: Headteacher, Chair of Governors

Key Relationships/Liaison with: Headteacher, School Business Manager, Chair of Governors, Senior Leaders, Governors, Trust Governance Professional

About the Role:

As Clerk to the Governors, you will play a vital role in supporting our Governors to comply with statutory requirements and best practices. Your work will ensure that Governors’ meetings run smoothly, agendas and relevant documents prepared in advance. During meetings, you will take accurate minutes and keep discussions on track.

Outside of meetings, you will provide administrative support, maintain governance records and develop a strong working knowledge of governance rules and procedures to assist Governors with any queries.

Why do Schools need Governance:

Governance is essential in schools to ensure strong leadership, accountability and high educational standards. School governors provide strategic direction, oversee financial management and hold the leadership team accountable for delivering the best possible education for all pupils within an inclusive and well-managed learning environment.

No Experience in Governance?

Applicants with transferable, relevant skills will be considered for interview and the Trust will provide full governance training and support.

Flexible Working:

Meetings are generally held in the evenings or after school, and in most cases, you will be expected to attend in person. In some instances, virtual attendance via Microsoft Teams may be possible at the discretion of the Chair of Governors or Headteacher. Outside of meetings, this is a flexible, home-based role, allowing you to manage your workload efficiently around other commitments.

You will be paid approximately 50 to 60 hours per year for the normal full LGB meeting cycle (5 to 6 meetings per year). There may be occasional additional meetings (e.g. appeal panels, sub committees). The role is permanent and term time only.

9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
10. The ability to work flexibly and meet deadlines
