About the role
The Marine Engineer will play a key role in maintaining the reliability and safety of our company vessels. You will lead engineering maintenance activities across the fleet, ensuring that all vessels and plant (marine and shoreside) are maintained to a high standard and remain ready to support daily operations. You will take a proactive approach to planned and preventative maintenance, fault‑finding and repairs, helping to minimise downtime and ensure equipment performs efficiently. Working closely with the wider Marine Team, you will also provide additional support during operations when required, contributing to the safe and effective running of the team. The role requires a strong working knowledge of marine diesel engines, planned maintenance systems and small craft operating procedures. You will demonstrate a commitment to safe working practices, high engineering standards and continuous improvement, while remaining flexible and willing to support the wider team as required.
What you’ll do
* Engineering, maintenance and operational support
o Operate as a sole engineer and manage vessel critical spares and procurement
o Lead all maintenance activities on marine and shoreside plant, reporting, managing faults and solving defects
o Organise third‑party support, including vessel coding
o Assist with internal and external audits on company‑owned vessels
o Lead maintenance of quayside equipment
o Support general operational activities across the port to maintain safe, efficient operations
o Assist with vessel operations alongside the skipper and other crew members to maintain and operate to the highest standards
o Assist with work‑boat duties
o Assist with the safe mooring and unmooring of visiting vessels
o Handle ropes, lines and associated equipment during berthing and departure operations
* Safety compliance and emergency response
o Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to minimise risks and ensure a safe working environment
o Participate in safety checks, drills and operational procedures to ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards
o Respond appropriately to emergency situations including fire, medical incidents and other marine emergencies in accordance with established procedures
* Communication, documentation and reporting
o Maintain clear communication with vessel masters, crew members and port colleagues to coordinate operations effectively
o Maintain accurate operational records, including navigation logs, maintenance records and other relevant documentation
o Assist in the preparation and review of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) relating to marine and port operations

What we expect of you
* Previous sea‑going engineering experience
* Strong understanding of marine diesel engines, auxiliary generator systems, hydraulics and vessel control systems
* Valid STCW qualifications (MCA EOOW, Fishing Class 2 or AEC2)
* Valid ENG1 or ML5 medical certificate
* Full UK driving licence
* Experience with Volvo engines (desirable)
* CSCS labourer card (desirable)
* Team collaboration skills; share knowledge and contribute to collective success
* Prioritise health and safety; proactively identify risks and ensure compliance with all regulations
* Prepared to work long hours in variable, inclement weather conditions and live onboard company workboats if working away on charters
* Able to lift heavy objects and work in confined spaces
* Excellent communication, clear and concise, tailored to audience to ensure understanding and alignment
* Remain positive and composed under pressure, adapting to challenges and maintaining focus to solve problems that may arise
* Uphold highest standards of integrity and ethics, making decisions that reflect honesty, transparency and respect for others
* Have keen eye for detail and prioritise accuracy, ensuring instructions are followed and surroundings are monitored
