Clinical Engineering Medical Equipment Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Engineering Department at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (NNUHFT) for a Band 3 Medical Equipment Assistant.

The Clinical Engineering Department directly and indirectly maintains the 24,000 medical devices within the NNUHFT and Cromer Hospitals.

The Specialist Medical Equipment Technician performs a vital role by ensuring that medical equipment maintenance and repair work is carried out promptly and in line with the manufacturer's requirements.


Main duties of the job

To provide support to the medical equipment technicians in the planned preventative maintenance, repair, calibration, evaluation, safety testing, acceptance testing and clinical support in accordance with current standards for a wide range of highly complex specialist medical equipment for which the Clinical Engineering Department is currently responsible.

To be able to plan own workload and assist the medical equipment technicians in organise servicing for the specialist area for which they are responsible, liaising with equipment users and suppliers. The post holder may also propose policy changes or procedures within the section or department and co‑ordinate, supervise, or advise junior staff.

Under instruction and supervision participate in the evaluation medical equipment devices with the user prior to purchase, carry out acceptance testing and be involved in adaptation of equipment.

To produce verbal and written reports, as required or self‑initiated, including adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals, test, service reports and specifications.

To travel as and when the service requires, to other Health Care Establishments and Home Patients in your own vehicle for which an allowance will be paid.

Job responsibilities

* The post holder will work under the instruction and supervision of the Workshops Manager at all times and will provide support to the medical equipment technicians, in the maintenance and repair of a wide range of medical equipment.
* The postholder will be required to organise their own workload to maximise efficiency and always inform senior staff of their whereabouts.
* To update and maintain accurate records of work using the medical equipment database with regard to equipment required for repair, service or maintenance.
* To assist in the production of service schedules and standard work instructions for equipment covered by the role.
* To be responsible for the day‑to‑day support to the clinical engineering department function and staff. Duties will include provision of the equipment library, maintenance of a range of basic medical devices and also include the provision of electrical safety testing, routine/calibration and minor equipment repair.
* To use standard and computer software and/or the internet to support aspects of medical equipment management.
* Assist with the maintenance of the technical library and stores including receipt and dispatching of medical equipment and spare parts, and distributing these to relevant parties as directed by senior technicians/workshops manager

Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 or an equivalent qualification in an engineering subject and/or equivalent experience in a hospital environment
* Good general standard of literacy and numeracy


Experience

* Knowledge of computer systems, e.g., Microsoft Office Applications
* Experience in NHS or customer service organisation


Skills

* Be able to physically lift heavy equipment, carry out repetitive equipment testing and work in awkward positions.
