Amentum is currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Energy business, which is entering an exciting phase supporting a key client’s UK nuclear fleet transformation, and supporting new small modular reactor developers. Our work covers Licensing, New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Decommissioning, with in-demand capabilities across the nuclear sector.
Your role will be to manage and deliver mechanical design solutions within scope, budget, and schedule on various projects. This role will be based at one of our Energy offices (Newcastle, Warrington, Glasgow, Gloucester, Stockton, Bristol, or Knutsford). We prioritize flexible working arrangements and are open to flexible patterns.
Role responsibilities:
1. Take ownership of technical challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions through stakeholder engagement.
2. Deliver technical analysis and design solutions.
3. Produce and review design deliverables such as assumption notes, technical specifications, calculation notes, and methodology plans.
4. Collaborate with international SMR developers to pass the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s Generic Design Assessment process.
5. Review and justify design decisions to ONR.
6. Fulfill and own CDM responsibilities.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
* MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
* Experience in heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear, or regulated industries.
* Chartered with IMechE, MIET, or working towards Chartership.
* Ability to work within a design team and collaborate across disciplines.
* Experience designing and/or constructing engineering solutions using American codes.
* Experience with pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, filters, HVAC, and datasheet authoring.
* Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or SolidWorks.
* Experience creating technical drawings to BS EN 8888 and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.
* Familiarity with safety cases in industrial environments.
* Knowledge of Matlab and MathCAD is beneficial.
* Experience writing test plans for Equipment Qualification.
* Understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes in mechanical engineering is desirable.
