Phlebotomy Team Leader

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust provides phlebotomy services across multiple sites, supporting in‑patient, out‑patient, clinic, GP and domiciliary settings. The Phlebotomy Team Leader will oversee phlebotomy operations, ensuring high‑quality patient care, compliance with health and safety standards and efficient sample collection. The role supports the Phlebotomy Supervisor and takes on supervisory duties during their absence.

Job responsibilities
* Lead and supervise phlebotomy activities across in‑patient, out‑patient, clinic, GP and home settings.
* Collect blood samples from patients of all ages, ranging from babies to the elderly, at in‑patient wards, out‑patient clinics, GP surgeries and domiciliary sites.
* Conduct competency assessments of the venepuncture procedure for all new staff.
* Monitor and record staff leave, absence and training schedules.
* Ensure mandatory training is completed and up to date.
* Maintain accurate records of sample tracking, key performance indicators, consumable stocks and audit information.
* Oversee safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps.
* Attend and support regular health and safety meetings and promote adherence to health and safety and Trust policy.
* Assist in preparing staff rotas and provide support to less experienced team members during orientation.
* Participate in appraisals, personal reviews and work to achieve personal objectives.
* Provide and participate in a comprehensive phlebotomy service 7 days per week, including all bank holidays.
* Assist in maintaining a high‑quality service for staff and patients.
* Perform additional duties as prescribed by the Network Phlebotomy Manager in accordance with this post grade.
* Handle shift patterns, including early, late, weekend and bank holiday shifts.
Required qualifications & experience
* Full and clean UK driving licence.
* Immunisation and vaccination record from a UK occupational health provider or GP.
* Competency in venepuncture across all patient ages and experience in phlebotomy supervision or leadership preferred.
* Knowledge of NHS phlebotomy standards, health and safety regulations and sample handling procedures.
* Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including early, late, weekend and bank holiday shifts.
* Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage staff scheduling and training.
