The Role
The APS 6 Propellant Analyst Team Lead is physically located at DSTG in Edinburgh, SA, operating within GWEO's Directorate of Engineering as part of the Explosive Ordnance Surveillance Team (EOST). This role leads a small team in the chemical analysis of munition propellants. This analysis provides Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) crucial for assessing the ongoing safety and suitability of ADF munitions. The team prepares, and chemically analyses propellant samples from ADF munitions, utilising various analytical techniques, and apparatus to report stability test results for OQE.

Working under limited direction in a blended and distributed team environment, responsibilities will include task management, laboratory workflow prioritisation, logistics, stakeholder liaison, point of contact for program enquiries, performing chemical analyses, and interpreting and reporting results.

The role will also include unscheduled and non-GWEO analytical requests as priorities dictate.

While flexible work arrangement may be available, regular on-site attendance is required to support hands-on testing and operational activities. A Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance is essential for this position.

About our Team
The Explosive Ordnance Surveillance Team (EOST) is an integral part of the Directorate of Engineering within the Portfolio, Program and Product/Project Management Services branch, which sits under the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Group Systems Division. The team is primarily based in Penrith, NSW. Our focus is to acquire and sustain guided weapons and munitions for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). We are committed to achieving a workplace culture that is inclusive and diverse; one which directly reflects the needs, and scope of Defence’s varied operational requirements.

Our branch comprises approximately 100 dedicated employees performing project management, logistics, and engineering governance frameworks to conduct compliance, and assurance activities of GWEO projects and products to ensure the safety and reliability of explosive material. We provide centralised, coordinated project, and product services including disposal management, EO transport and configuration management. We also provide advice, and support to improve the management of projects and products with a broad range of business management services.

Our branch partners with domestic, and international industry to deliver materiel capability to Defence, managing a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of complex, high-profile acquisitions and sustainment activities to support the ADF.

Other benefits include:

1. 15.4% superannuation;
2. Access to personalised professional development pathways, including opportunities for Defence-funded post-graduate study;
3. Additional leave days between Christmas and New Year;
4. Focus on work/life balance; and
5. Salary sacrifice opportunities.

Our Ideal Candidate
Explosive Ordnance Surveillance Team is seeking experienced candidate to join our growing team who:

6. Demonstrates superior analytical skills, with motivation to be innovative, and to challenge traditional ways of conducting business.
7. Demonstrates effective leadership and mentoring to integrated teams, promoting collaborations, and a shared commitment to achieving outcomes.
8. Demonstrates high-level communication and stakeholder skills, fostering effective collaboration and strong relationships across diverse internal and external stakeholders.
9. Actively supports staff development through ongoing professional growth, coaching, and fostering a culture of continuous self-improvement.
10. Provides reliable support to complex engineering activities, upholding integrity while contributing to a positive and cohesive team culture.

If you
11. Enjoy supporting challenging, and highly complex engineering activities,
12. Are pragmatic and solutions focused, and
13. Are not afraid to challenge the traditional ways of doing business.

Then this is the role for you.
