Seeking a highly skilled and experienced Child Protection Chair to lead and oversee Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences (ICPC & RCPC). This role is essential in ensuring that children at risk of significant harm receive effective multi-agency safeguarding intervention and support.
As a Child Protection Chair, you will provide independent oversight of child protection cases, ensuring that robust safeguarding plans are in place, statutory requirements are met, and best practice is upheld. You will work closely with social workers, partner agencies, and families to promote child-centred decision-making and ensure timely interventions that improve outcomes for children.
Key Responsibilities:
* Chair Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences, ensuring clear, outcome-focused safeguarding plans are developed.
* Ensure child protection plans are proportionate, evidence-based, and effectively reduce risk to children.
* Provide professional challenge and scrutiny to social work practice, ensuring high-quality assessments and interventions.
* Monitor safeguarding thresholds, ensuring consistent decision-making across multi-agency partners.
* Ensure that children’s voices, wishes, and feelings are central to decision-making.
* Work collaboratively with social workers, health professionals, police, education services, and other safeguarding agencies.
* Ensure effective information-sharing and multi-agency safeguarding responses.
* Promote a strengths-based approach to child protection, supporting families to make positive changes where possible.
* Provide guidance and consultation to social workers and partner agencies on safeguarding best practices.
* Monitor the progress of child protection plans, intervening where necessary to address drift or delay.
* Escalate concerns regarding inadequate safeguarding practice or systemic issues to senior managers.
* Contribute to service development, training, and policy reviews to improve child protection practice.
* Ensure compliance with Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018, Children Act 1989 & 2004, and local safeguarding policies.
Requirements of the role:
* Qualifications: A recognised Social Work degree (e.g., BA/MA in Social Work, DipSW, or equivalent)
* Registration: Current registration with Social Work England
* Experience: Extensive post-qualification experience in children’s social work, particularly in child protection, safeguarding, and court work
* Supervision: Previous experience supervising or mentoring social workers is essential
* Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and best practice guidance in children’s social care, including safeguarding and risk management
* Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to manage a complex caseload while supporting and developing colleagues
* Other: A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes are desirable
