Job Description
Creative Break Time is bringing Southend artists and teachers together in transformative ways. From 2024 - 2027, Focal Point Gallery, Metal and The Other MA (TOMA) are collaboratively exploring the creative wellbeing of teachers whilst radically providing them with care and creative time to foster inspiration, collaboration, and peer learning. Creative Break Time is made possible by Freelands Foundation.

Artist Open Call
If you\'re an artist or practitioner who lives and/or works in Essex, with a current focus or interest in creative education, we\'d love to hear from you. Selected artists will attend a series of facilitated and social residencies in exciting Essex locations, as well as being given time and support to collaborate with teachers inside and outside of the school grounds.
Selected artists will be a part of a cohort of 4 artists for this year of the project, with opportunities to contribute to the wider cohort of 12 artists in the following delivery year (2026/27)
Artist Fee
There is a total budget of £5,100 for this work, which includes artist fee and prep time.
In addition, we have allocated budget to support access needs and funds to support caring responsibilities.
Creative Break Time and its delivery partners Focal Point Gallery, Metal and TOMA are committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion throughout our work and within our workforces. We are keen to work with people who are representative of all sections of society and particularly those who may be marginalised within the cultural sector.

Applicants must live and/or work in Essex
Applicants must be able to attend overnight residencies during all of the following dates: Monday 10th - Wednesday 12th November 2025 inclusive Tuesday 3rd - Friday 6th February 2026 inclusive Tuesday 12th - Wednesday 13th May 2026 inclusive
Whilst this opportunity is best suited to individual artists, collectives are welcome to apply and split the artist fee.
Job Responsibilities
Your contribution to Creative Break Time
As an active research project, Creative Break Time prioritises experimentation and exploration. Instead of being an outcome-led project, we are holding space for connection, conversation and creativity, and embrace process led practice.
Selected artists\' responsibilities will include:
* Actively contribute to discussions and activities which will explore creative education, wellbeing and arts practice
* Participating in activities and sharings whilst on residence
* Shaping and delivering artist-led facilitation with teachers (and potentially pupils) both inside and outside of school grounds (responding to the time spent together on residence)
* Feeding into the development of a brand new set of artist-made learning resources for educators
* Share your expertise where suitable with fellow participants on this project
In the first year of this project, we found that teachers valued:
