Position Summary
We are looking for a highly skilled Substation Primary Design Engineer to join ongoing transmission and distribution programmes across the UK. The successful candidate will take ownership of producing robust primary design packages, ensuring technical integrity, and supporting the safe delivery of substation projects operating at voltages between 132kV and 400kV.
This role is ideal for an engineer with solid National Grid project experience, strong design leadership capabilities, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Core Responsibilities
* Develop primary substation design documentation such as SLDs, layouts, busbar configurations, earthing designs, and equipment specifications.
* Lead and coordinate primary design activities throughout assigned schemes, ensuring alignment with industry regulations and client requirements.
* Provide technical verification, conduct design reviews, and maintain high standards of quality and safety.
* Work collaboratively with civil, protection & control, and other engineering disciplines to deliver fully integrated design solutions.
* Support design submissions and approvals with National Grid and additional stakeholders.
* Contribute engineering expertise during meetings, site visits, and construction phases when required.
* Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and UK transmission engineering standards.
* Track deliverables, manage documentation, and maintain design progress throughout each project stage.
Required Experience
* Background in primary substation design for 132kV-400kV networks.
* Strong working knowledge of National Grid technical standards (NGTS, TP, etc.).
* Experience working as a Lead Design Engineer or in a design assurance capacity.
* Demonstrated involvement in UK transmission projects (National Grid experience is a strong advantage).
* Ability to produce comprehensive engineering drawings and technical documentation.
* Strong communication and coordination skills.
Desirable Attributes
* Experience with EPCs, DNOs, or major transmission & distribution contractors.
* Understanding of both AIS and GIS substation design principles.
* Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other specialised design tools.
Qualifications
* Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
* Chartered status or working toward chartership is beneficial.
