Aspiring Forensic Psychologist – Learning Support Assistant Hackney – Education and Training – Aspiring Forensic Psychologist – Learning Support Assistant Hackney

We are looking for a dedicated and resilient Learning Support Assistant who is passionate about pursuing a future career in Forensic Psychology or the wider mental health sector. This role is based in a supportive secondary school in Hackney and provides valuable experience working with students who have Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) needs, autism, behavioural challenges, and those who are school refusers—an ideal foundation for anyone interested in psychological development, risk factors, and behavioural patterns.

About the Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, safeguarding teams, pastoral staff, and external professionals to support vulnerable students across the school. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Providing one-to-one and small-group support for students with emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs.
2. Supporting young people with SEMH challenges, helping them develop emotional regulation skills, self-awareness, and confidence.
3. Working with autistic students using structured approaches, visual supports, and clear routines to help them access learning.
4. Supporting students who are at risk of disengagement or school refusal, using relationship-building and consistent pastoral support.
5. Assisting with behaviour plans, risk assessments, and targeted interventions tailored to students who display complex behaviours.
6. Helping to create a safe, predictable, and trauma-aware environment for students who may have experienced adversity.
7. Working collaboratively with the safeguarding and SEN teams to monitor progress, identify risk factors, and implement appropriate strategies.

How This Role Supports Your Future Career in Forensic Psychology
This position offers exceptionally relevant experience for those aiming to pursue a career in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, criminology, youth justice, or mental health. You will:

8. Gain first-hand experience supporting adolescents who display behavioural difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and complex psychological profiles.
9. Develop practical skills in de-escalation, behaviour analysis, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed practice.
10. Build insight into how early mental health difficulties, adverse childhood experiences, and environmental factors influence behaviour—key themes in forensic work.
11. Work with safeguarding teams and multi-agency professionals, giving you exposure to risk assessment, protective factors, and intervention planning.
12. Strengthen your understanding of vulnerable young people, including those at risk of exclusion, offending, or social withdrawal.
13. Enhance your reflective practice skills through observing behaviour patterns and considering psychological motivations and influences.
14. Build a strong foundation of experience highly valued by postgraduate forensic psychology training pathways and mental health employers.

If you are calm under pressure, compassionate, and motivated by understanding behaviour and supporting vulnerable young people—and you are committed to a future career in forensic psychology or mental health—we would love to hear from you.
