Senior Locally Employed Doctor in Ophthalmology (Corneal)
Applications are invited for a 12‑month fellowship in Ophthalmology (Corneal) at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital to commence August 2026 to August 2027.
The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond. The hospital offers a wide range of sub‑specialties, including Paediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics, Neuro‑ophthalmology & Ocular motility, Cornea / External Eye Disease, Cataract, Glaucoma, Uveitis, Medical Retina and Vitreoretinal surgery.
As part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) the hospital sits in a new, dedicated PFI building alongside the Manchester Royal Infirmary, St. Mary’s Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Other MFT hospitals include Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General, Altrincham, the Dental Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital.
The Corneal Unit consists of four consultants: Prof Fiona Carley, Ms Jennifer Kim, Mr Andrew Walkden and Mr Leon Au. The fellowship offers wide clinical experience in the management of corneal and external eye diseases and laser refractive surgery, with research encouraged and support from a specialist nurse practitioner and trainees in the NW training programme.
During the fellowship the Fellow will attend specialist clinics and dedicated corneal theatre sessions under the direction of the Consultant trainers, perform supervised and, where appropriate, unsupervised surgery, and manage a full range of patients. Weekly activities typically include 3 supervised operating sessions, 2 specialist clinics, weekly refractive laser suites, and a lead acute corneal clinic once a week. The Fellow will also supervise junior trainees as part of their training experience.
