Locum Consultant in Anaesthesia

UHL is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. We serve the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and specialist services over a much wider area.

Applications are invited for enthusiastic and highly motivated Locum Consultants in Anaesthesia to join our expanding team at the University Hospitals of Leicester.

This is a full time post for 12 months, with many of our previous post holders progressing to substantive positions within the Trust.


Main duties of the job

* To provide Consultant Anaesthetic cover for anaesthesia, elective and emergency surgery at UHL including preoperative assessment and postoperative care.
* To participate in an Anaesthetic On-Call Rota and/or weekend emergency or trauma cover.
* To support the provision of consultant delivered perioperative care.
* Deliver a high quality anaesthetic service, supporting the department with a positive attitude towards flexible working.
* Supervise and train junior anaesthetists.
* Work with the acute pain team to provide safe and effective postoperative analgesia to patients.
* Take part in pre assessment and high risk clinics.
* Teaching postgraduate and undergraduate, research and administration.
* Work with the Clinical Governance team to enhance patient safety.
* To work flexibly to help cover the workload of the CMG.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

* Provision of a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective and emergency care at UHL, including preoperative assessment and postoperative care.
* Participation in the Consultant Anaesthetist non-resident on-call rota and weekend resident rota.
* Support for the Consultant-delivered Perioperative Medicine Service.
* Flexibility to support the workload and cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
* Participation in service development and business planning with other Consultants, the CMG, and local GPs and commissioners.
* Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff in line with local policies
* Teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required; contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education locally and nationally.
* Participation in teaching and training of junior staff; supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff; acting as a training supervisor where appropriate.
* Participation in medical audit, Clinical Governance processes, and CPD with attendance at governance meetings mandatory.
* Maintain duties to the highest standards in line with GMC Good Medical Practice and current quality initiatives.
* Continuing medical education; study leave is provided where appropriate.
* Completion of required induction and competence programmes; maintain CPD for revalidation and annual appraisal, with mandatory training.
* Adhere to Trust corporate and directorate induction requirements.

Person specification


Qualifications / Training

* Full GMC registration
* MB, BS or equivalent
* Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview, or fulfil requirements for CESR and be working towards this
* FRCA or equivalent
* Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
* Higher degree such as MSc, MD or equivalent


Experience / Clinical Skills

* Fully trained in Anaesthesia
* Excellent clinical skills and experience to meet all aspects of the Job Plan
* Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest


Communication Skills

* Demonstrable written and spoken English sufficient for effective communication with patients and colleagues
* Empathetic and able to consider others’ perspectives
* Proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment


Equality & Diversity

* Commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect appropriate to their needs


Analytical and Judgement skills

* Willingness to work as part of a team and share administrative responsibilities
* Awareness of Service Development issues


Teaching

* Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate learners
* Evidence of training for teaching and teaching efficacy
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment in the specialty


Research & Audit

* Related training and research interests
* Experience in and commitment to medical audit
* Published research in a relevant field
