Job Summary

Plymouth Hospitals is a large acute trust in the Southwest of England, and provides perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across the region. The hospital is a designated Trauma Centre and tertiary referral centre for Neurological and Cardiac patients. The trust is a teaching hospital with close links to the Peninsula Medical School and the University of Plymouth.

Children's Theatres currently has 3 Theatres, day of surgery admissions, a recovery /discharge area, and preoperative assessment. We are situated on level 2 within Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Specialities covered within Children's Theatres include Urology, ENT, Plastics, Maxillo-facial, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, community dental, Ophthalmology, etc. A mixture of day case, in-patient, elective and emergency work is undertaken within the unit.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our fantastic theatre team. The successful applicant must show a commitment to high quality patient care and excellent team work along with a genuine interest in the care of patients undergoing invasive procedures. It will also be required to work in partnership with other teams within the Theatre Central cluster, supporting staff, students, patients and relatives.

The Trust is a 24 hour major trauma centre and successful applicants to the post will be expected to participate in the 7 day service, working the required shifts to meet the service demand.

As a team we are dedicated to delivering high quality care for our patients and currently have an exciting and ongoing programme for improvement. We have a team of dedicated Perioperative Clinical Educators who work alongside the teams in practice, ensuring that the theatre teams are supported and remain current in perioperative practices.

Job Responsibilities

* Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period.
* Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team.
* Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources.
* Demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.
* To engage and interact with patients and their carers, explaining procedures and treatments to gain co-operation, understanding and allay apprehension.
* Assist with projects to develop and enhance patient care. Participate in the evaluation of patient outcomes, including audit, risk management and infection control.
* Assists in other clinical areas and speciality theatres if the clinical situation and staffing levels demand.
* Attend relevant meetings and deliver feedback.
* To develop and achieve objectives identified through continuing appraisal of job role.
* To develop appraisal skills and carry out appraisals and personal development plan for non-registered practitioners in line with Agenda for Change and the knowledge skills framework.
* Report and manage untoward incidents, such as clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors, as detailed in Trust policies and procedures.
* Demonstrating an awareness of and compliance with Health and Safety regulations/procedures that apply to staff, patients and visitors within the Trust premises, reporting any deficiencies in equipment, furnishings or matters of hygiene.

Person Specification


Essential


Knowledge & Experience

* RN/ODP training completed


Desirable

* Demonstrable experience of perioperative care
* Completed preceptorship programme
* Competent in anaesthetics, scrub and recovery


Qualifications

* NMC Registered nurse / HCPC registered ODP


Desirable

* Basic computer skills
* Relevant theatre based course
* Mentorship/NVQ trainer/assessor/theatre educator or relevant educational course
* Educated to diploma or degree level


Aptitude & Abilities

* Proven ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical care and act accordingly
* Proven evidence of recent CPD knowledge and ability to apply evidence-based practice
* Appraisal skills

* Demonstrate awareness of financial constraints

* Enthusiasm for introducing and facilitating change
