Job Summary
The Museum of Oxford (MOX) is seeking an experienced freelance Marketing Lead to create and deliver a fast-paced, targeted Marketing & Communications Strategy as the museum transitions from free entry to a small admission charge from January 2026.
Job Description
You will lead the development, delivery and evaluation of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that supports the introduction of paid entry while upholding MOX's reputation for accessibility, inclusivity and community engagement. Working with museum staff, Oxford City Council and the Museum of Oxford Development Trust, you will shape messaging, run integrated campaigns and manage stakeholder communications during a sensitive period of change.
Funded by DCMS/Arts Council England as a Museum Renewal Fund grant, this short-term but high-impact contract includes supporting the handover to a newly created in-house marketing role by March 2026.
Available from mid-December 2025 and able to work at pace.
Proven marketing leadership in museums, culture, heritage or tourism.
Strong strategic, digital and communications expertise.
Experience managing sensitive or change-related communications.
Excellent project management, stakeholder engagement and data‑led decision‑making skills.
Knowledge of Oxford's cultural landscape.
Experience in social‑history or community‑focused museums.
Content production or design skills.
Experience of public sector or Arts Council‑funded projects.
Job Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement a clear Marketing & Communications Strategy for the introduction of a small entry charge.
Create messaging that explains the rationale and benefits of paid entry.
Plan and deliver digital, print, PR and advertising campaigns.
Manage the production of marketing assets and paid campaigns (including bus, digital and influencer activity).
Use audience insight and analytics to track performance and refine activity.
Support donor messaging in collaboration with external fundraising consultants.
Draft and manage budgets, and contribute to long‑term 3‑5 year marketing planning.

This role is being offered as a freelance position, with an estimated time commitment of 72 days 9am -5pm at £400 per day.
Contract value: £28,800
This is a hybrid role. It is anticipated that most meetings will be online with a requirement to meet prospects and attend some events and meetings in person in Oxford from time to time.
The tender costs should include travel and all other costs associated with the work.
