Consultant Ophthalmologist – SI in Cornea & Anterior Segment We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant colleague to the department of Ophthalmology within the Digestive Diseases and Surgery Clinical Service Unit (CSU). The post holder will be expected to have broad experience of the specialty, particularly Cornea and Anterior Segment. Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC at the time of application, fit to practice and able to demonstrate the required broad‑based training, experience and knowledge for the post.
Main duties of the job This post covers all aspects of a Consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, service development, education and managerial responsibilities.
The successful candidate should offer expert clinical opinion and management on a wide range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the subspecialty and general ophthalmology, at a consultant level. A commitment to the Trust’s clinical governance and risk strategy is mandatory.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide expert medical and surgical management of patients with corneal and external eye conditions such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, microbial keratitis, ocular surface inflammation and dry eye disease.
Continuing responsibility for patients under the Consultant’s care, autonomously managing corneal patients presenting within the service.
Perform full‑thickness and lamellar corneal transplant surgery including endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK, DMEK, DALK) and oversee the keratoconus cross‑linking service.
Perform other corneal surgeries such as pterygium surgery and complex cataract surgery.
Participate in general ophthalmology clinics, theatre lists and emergency eye care on a shared rota basis.
Lead service development and education in the department, whilst working with a team of optometrists providing a virtual test‑only component of the keratoconus service.
Person specification Experience
Evidence of completing an approved period of training/sub‑specialist clinical experience in Cornea and Anterior Segment.
Qualifications
MBChB or equivalent / MRCP or FRCS of equivalent to specialty (UK) or equivalent.
Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) or equivalent / CCT, or within 6 months of AAC date.
On Specialist Register with the GMC and continue to hold a licence to practice.
Appropriate UK professional registration.
