Band 6 Children’s Occupational Therapist
Full or Part‑time – up to 37.5 hours per week (Flexible working considered).
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our team. The post holder will provide high quality occupational therapy to children up to 19 years with difficulties in play, self‑care and/or school occupations.
They will plan and provide specialist assessment, advice and intervention, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, school staff and families. The role is autonomous, accountable and operates across a variety of settings including the Phoenix Children’s Resource Centre, children’s homes, special schools, mainstream schools and nurseries.
Main duties of the job
* Take responsibility for a clinical caseload and develop a specialist paediatric occupational therapy service, including assessment, interpretation of results, evaluation, treatment and advice.
* Carry out assessments and evaluate the child’s occupational performance using standardised and non‑standardised methods, observation, interview with parent or carer, and teacher questionnaires.
* Plan and implement specialist treatment programmes and strategies to enhance the child’s ability to perform everyday activities and participate in multiple environments, through verbal and written advice, written advice sheets, individual and group therapy.
* Assess the child’s need for small aids and specialist equipment (e.g., specialist seating, bath aids and toilet aids), advise and recommend appropriate equipment for use at home, pre‑school and school in line with service criteria.
* Review equipment, checking size and suitability as required, and adjust to suit the child’s changing needs in a range of performance contexts.
* Work autonomously and without direct supervision in a defined clinical area, and be accountable for own clinical actions.
Training
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Evidence of attendance at training in the area of assessment and treatment of children with functional needs
* Upper limb assessment / Interventions / Splinting
* Relevant post‑registration specialist education – ideally sensory integration training levels 1 and 2
Qualifications
* Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
* Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council
* Member of the specialist section: children and young people (Royal College of Occupational Therapists)
Specific Skills
* Independent management of a complex caseload within a community paediatric setting
* Prioritise workload and own time effectively
* Assess and analyse a child’s functional abilities using standardised and non‑standardised methods, utilising activity analysis skills
* Excellent written communication skills – record actions and decisions accurately and succinctly within notes and reports
* Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, communicating with a range of professionals, children and parents; adept at using audit and quality tools, upper limb splinting application/interview techniques, and managing difficult conversations with empathy and tact
* Working knowledge of child development and various conditions and their implications for Occupational Therapy
* Evidence‑based, occupation‑based practice – confident in relating theory to practice
* Current driving licence and vehicle access for work; ability to use public transport for visits
* Knowledge and experience of basic audit and quality tools
Experience
* Previous experience of working in community NHS paediatric practice
* Experience of assessment, planning and delivering occupation‑focused intervention for children with a range of difficulties (e.g., coordination, sensory processing, physical disabilities)
* Experience of equipment prescription and its principles in the paediatric setting
* Experience running training sessions for carers, clients and other professionals
* Experience in specialist school provision
* Working knowledge of the SEND agenda and reforms
* Experience delivering presentations or facilitating workshops
* Experience supervising staff and/or students in fieldwork education
* Experience setting up new projects/initiatives
Information Technology
* Efficient computer user for all used programmes such as Microsoft Office, internet, email
* Knowledge of EMIS
