Job Description:
Purpose of the Role
To provide high-quality care, leadership, and support within a residential childrens home. The Deputy Manager plays a key role in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, supporting staff development, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This position involves both operational and supervisory responsibilities and requires a flexible and proactive approach.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Registered Manager to ensure the home meets all statutory and regulatory requirements.
* Safeguard and promote the welfare, safety, health, and development of all children in the home.
* Lead and support staff to deliver structured, therapeutic, and nurturing care tailored to each child.
* Develop and maintain individual care plans and risk assessments, ensuring regular review and updates.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports in line with legislation and internal policies.
* Participate in the on-call rota and provide shift cover, including sleep-ins, when required.
* Create staff rotas and manage annual leave schedules.
* Attend and contribute to childrens reviews, education and health meetings, and other multi-agency forums.
* Oversee delegated areas including health and safety, food hygiene, and keyworker responsibilities.
* Mentor new staff, provide supervision, conduct appraisals, and support professional development.
* Take the lead during shifts and deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager.
* Liaise effectively with external agencies and regulatory bodies including Ofsted.
Person SpecificationEssential:
* Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent).
* Willingness to work towards Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare.
* Demonstrable understanding of child development, safeguarding, and relevant legislation (e.g., Childrens Homes Regulations 2015).
* Experience of working in a residential childcare setting.
* Strong leadership and team-working skills.
* Excellent communication skills verbal, written, and IT literate.
* Ability to maintain professional boundaries, act as a role model, and promote positive outcomes for children.
* Flexibility to cover shifts, including nights and weekends.
* Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
* Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management (Children & Young People).
* Knowledge of therapeutic approaches to childcare.
* Experience in managing teams or acting in a senior role.
* Creative and innovative approach to problem-solving and care planning.
