The Company
This role is with a long-established British manufacturer of bespoke industrial machinery, recognised for engineering quality, reliability and innovation. After a record year of machinery sales, the business is expanding its Controls team and now seeking an experienced Control Systems Engineer / Controls Engineer to take technical ownership of control systems projects.
The Role
This is a full-lifecycle position, ideal for a Controls Engineer who enjoys designing, programming, testing and commissioning Control Systems for complex machinery. As a Control Systems Engineer, you will work across PLC programming, HMI software, electrical design and commissioning, ensuring machines operate correctly and safely.
Key responsibilities include:
* Design and specify electrical control circuits, electrical schematics, and Bill of Materials for machinery
* Develop, write and debug PLC software and HMI screens (Siemens, Omron, Rockwell/Allen Bradley)
* Full lifecycle development: concept, design, safety checks, documentation, FAT/SAT
* On-site and remote commissioning, fault finding and debugging (UK & overseas, short planned trips only)
* Work closely with mechanical engineers, electrical design, projects and software teams
* Use CAD systems for electrical design and documentation
* Ensure high standards of testing, validation, software quality and machine performance
This opportunity suits a motivated Control Systems Engineer / Controls Engineer who enjoys both software programming, electrical design, and hands-on commissioning within a machinery environment.
What We're Looking For
* Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Control Systems Engineer, PLC Engineer, Controls Design Engineer or Automation Engineer
* Strong PLC programming and HMI development skills (Siemens / Rockwell AB / Omron)
* Strong understanding of electrical design, CAD, electrical components, wiring and schematics
* Experience with control software, machinery control systems, and automated equipment
* Confident with fault finding, debugging, testing and commissioning
* Able to work independently and manage control system projects from end to end
* Willingness to travel for short, planned commissioning trips (approx. 4–5 weeks per year)
