Primary HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant)

Location: Barnet, London

Start Date: ASAP / September 2025

Pay scale: £30,048.00 - £30,958.00 Annually (Actual) - NJC salary scale 20-22

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of a welcoming, talented and highly motivated team at a Primary Academy in Barnet.

We are looking for a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to provide support for pupils, the teachers and the school in order to raise standards of achievement for all pupils (e.g. SEN, EAL, GT, all underachieving groups), by utilising advanced levels of knowledge and skills when assisting with planning, monitoring, assessing and managing classes, and to encourage pupils to become independent learners, to provide support for their welfare, and to support the inclusion of pupils in all aspects of school life. To have an impact on children’s learning and progress.

The Primary Higher Level Teaching Assistant works under the instruction and guidance of both class teachers and subject specialists. They support the delivery of quality learning and teaching helping to raise standards of achievement and provide pastoral care for pupils. At Wren Academy we value our teaching assistants and give them support and assistance in order that they may effectively and happily perform their duties. Our teaching assistants may be asked to support the whole class or work 1:1 with a SEN pupil directed by the SENDCo.

Particular Responsibilities

1. To teach whole class lessons for planned and unplanned absence of a teacher
2. Teach guided groups effectively, as directed by the SENDCo, ensuring the

needs of the children of all abilities are met

3. To implement planned support programmes for particular pupils with differing

learning needs

4. Help foster good relationships at all levels
5. Write, type and record detailed comments regarding the children’s learning
6. Use IT to take photos and record children’s achievements
7. Lunchtime and playtime supervision
8. Support SEND children when needed

Key Tasks

Planning

9. Plan and prepare lessons with guidance from teachers, participating in all

stages of the planning cycle, including in lesson planning, evaluating and

adjusting lessons/work plans on a weekly basis.

10. Develop and prepare resources for learning activities in accordance with lesson

plans and in response to pupil need.

11. Cover lessons when staff are absent with pre planned lessons provided by class

13. Plan and deliver effective interventions looking at pupil progress and pupil wellbeing
14. Prepare effective Smartboards for weekly lessons under the guidance of class teachers.
15. Within an agreed system of supervision and within a pre-determined lesson framework, teach whole classes.
16. Provide verbal and written feedback in line with the marking policy
17. Motivate and progress pupils’ learning by using clearly structured, interesting teaching and learning activities.
18. Be familiar with lesson plans, PLP targets and learning objectives.
19. Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
20. Promote and support the inclusion of all pupils, including those with specific needs, both in learning activities and within the classroom.
21. Use behaviour management strategies, in line with the school’s policy and procedures, to contribute to a purposeful learning environment and encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others
22. Monitor and oversee Lexia, out literacy programme under the guidance of the SENDCo
23. In accordance with arrangements made by the Headteacher, progress pupils’ learning in a range of classroom settings, including working with individuals, small groups and whole classes where the assigned teacher is not present
24. Organise and safely manage the appropriate learning environment and resources
25. Promote and reinforce children’s self-esteem and independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance

Monitoring and Assessment

26. Assess pupils’ responses to learning tasks and where appropriate, modify methods to meet individual and/or group needs.
27. Monitor pupils’ participation and progress and provide constructive feedback to pupils in relation to their progress and achievement within planned interventions
28. Maintain and analyse records of pupils’ progress for planned interventions

Behaviour and Pastoral

32. Understand and implement school child protection procedures and comply with legal responsibilities.
33. Assist in maintaining good discipline of pupils throughout the school and escort and supervise pupils on planned visits and journeys.
34. Foster and maintain constructive and supportive relationships with parents/carers, exchanging appropriate information, facilitating their support for their child’s attendance, access and learning, and supporting home to school and community links.
35. Supervise pupils in the playground and plan and organise play time activities

Assessment

36. To continue personal development as agreed in performance management.
37. To engage actively in the performance review process.
38. To address the performance management targets set by the line manager.
39. To oversee staff performance management and training and to maintain training records.

Professional Behaviour

40. To maintain high standards of professional behaviour towards colleagues and students
41. To lead by example and to follow the Academy’s dress code and code of conduct
42. To carry out duties in a friendly, helpful and professional manner
43. To have a flexible approach and to be prepared for the unusual

44. To play a full part in the life of the Academy community, to support its distinctive aim, ethos and policies, and to encourage staff and students to follow this example
45. To support the Academy in meeting its legal requirements as a Church School
46. To have a record of excellent health, attendance and punctuality

Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications

47. GCSE levels A-C in literacy and numeracy, or the equivalent
48. Willingness to gain a first aid qualification Experience of teaching in a range of year groups (ECTS welcome to apply)

Experience

49. Experience of working with young children
50. Experience of covering whole classes
51. Demonstrable levels of numeracy & literacy equivalent to GCSE (A-C) or NVQ

Level 2 (or by test)

52. Training in relevant learning strategies e.g. literacy
53. A minimum of two years’ experience of working with children.

Skills

54. Ability to assist children on an individual basis, in small groups and through whole class work
55. Clearly explain tasks and foster children’s independence
56. Can successfully supervise children, modelling defined behaviour management policies
57. Ability to work with guidance, but under limited supervision
58. Liaise and communicate effectively with others
59. Demonstrate good organisational skills
60. Possess good written and verbal communication skills
61. Effective oral and written communication skills
62. Excellent interpersonal skills both in working relationship with young pupils and informing effective professional relationships with a wide range of contacts
63. Good organisational and time management skills
64. Sound IT skills to support learning and maintain electronic information systems

Knowledge

65. Knowledge of how to teach literacy and mathematical skills
66. Knowledge & understanding of the National Curriculum
67. Understanding of positive behaviour management strategies
68. Understanding of First Aid procedures
69. Knowledge of the needs of young children and SEND needs
70. An understanding of child development and the ways in which children learn
