The Senior Energy Engineer will play a pivotal role in the identification, technical assessment & design delivery of SaveMoneyCutCarbon’s decarbonisation and energy efficiency projects, supporting clients to cut costs and carbon through practical and data driven engineering solutions. They will bring a strong foundation in energy efficiency, including on site evaluation, opportunity identification and detailed technical analysis across building systems. Working as part of the Consultancy management team, The Senior Energy Engineer will be accountable for the quality, consistency and continues improvement of SaveMoneyCutCarbon’s Consultative Building Audit Services, ensuring outputs meet high technical standards and deliver tangible outcomes for clients. In addition, they will oversee the delivery of M&E designs (working with external M&E Design Engineers), lead detailed building assessments, and develop robust technical and financial models to support audits, ESOS compliance, and Thermal Decarbonisation Strategies. This role combines technical depth with leadership, project management, and supply chain and client-facing consultancy, ensuring recommendations are not only credible but effectively implemented to deliver measurable impact. Key Responsibilities Client Engagement & Technical Consultancy Liaise directly with client stakeholders to understand their operational challenges, identify energy efficiency opportunities, and develop bespoke technical solutions. Support business development and sales across departments in preparing client proposals, tenders, and scope of work documents. Present technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, building trusted long-term relationships. Act as the point of contact between external contractors and clients, ensuring ability to competently relay technical information and manage clients’ requirements. Energy Auditing & Building Analysis Lead detailed surveys of buildings and facilities to identify energy efficiency opportunities across HVAC, lighting, controls, renewables, and water systems. Prepare comprehensive audit reports that quantify carbon and cost-saving measures. Deliver ESOS assessments and energy audits in line with BS EN 16247, ISO50001 or ASHRAE Level 2–3 standards. Undertake energy analysis and recommend and use relevant software. Technical Design & Project Development Oversee conceptual and detailed Mechanical & Electrical Services designs to support retrofit and decarbonisation projects. Review feasibility studies for renewable energy systems (e.g. solar PV, heat pumps, CHP, biomass, and energy storage). Create Decarbonisation Plans for existing buildings, mapping energy and carbon reduction pathways aligned to client sustainability goals. Produce financial models for energy and building services upgrade projects, demonstrating ROI. Oversee design-to-delivery handover, working closely with the PMO and Project Delivery teams to ensure technical integrity and successful implementation. Innovation & Continuous Improvement Stay abreast of emerging technologies, funding schemes, and legislation influencing energy efficiency and building performance. Contribute to SMCC’s continuous improvement of audit methodologies, design tools, and data-driven insight models. Share knowledge internally through training sessions, technical guides, and mentoring. Work as part of the Consultative Management Team to define, implement, and monitor operational standards, ensuring consistency and best practice across all audit deliverables. Essential Skills & Experience Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent) Strong background in mechanical, electrical or building services engineering with proven experience in energy and carbon reduction projects. Experience managing external contractors and consultant engineers to deliver coordinated designs in line with client expectations. Track record of delivering ESOS audits, feasibility studies, or decarbonisation projects. Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical services, renewables, and controls systems. Financial and technical modelling skills; able to translate engineering data into clear business cases. Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills. A minimum of 5 years' experience in energy engineering or a similar discipline Desirable Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards registration with a relevant body (CIBSE, IMechE, EI). Certified ESOS Lead Assessor or experience supporting ESOS compliance. Experience with IPMVP measurement and verification. Familiarity with relevant UK standards and frameworks: BS EN 16247, ISO 14064, PPN 06/21, SECR, ISO 50001 or Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.
