Band 7 Children's Occupational Therapist

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Band 7 Occupational Therapist in the Children’s Occupational Therapy service, overseeing the EHC assessment provision in the team. This will involve completing assessments and providing reports for statutory assessments, along with quality assurance of reports and opportunities for multi-professional working by attending EHC panel.

The post holder will work as part of a team to provide a high-quality occupational therapy service to children up to 18 years of age with difficulties in play, self-care and/or school occupations due to various conditions.

They will plan and provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessment, advice, and intervention for children with functional difficulties, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, school staff and families. They will work autonomously and without direct supervision in a defined clinical area and will be accountable for their clinical actions.

The post holder will see children in settings including the Phoenix Children’s Resource Centre, children’s homes, special school provisions, mainstream schools and nurseries.

Interviews expected to be held week commencing 17th November 2025.


Main duties of the job

To provide Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan assessments, high-quality reports and reviews within statutory timeframes and to keep up to date with best practice regarding the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND).

To be responsible for overseeing the EHC assessment provision within the service and quality assurance of reports to ensure they meet the SEND Code of Practice and guidance from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

To maintain specialist knowledge of the EHC process and relevant legislation, to lead on EHCs and the SEND Code of Practice within the OT team.

To carry out assessments and evaluate the child’s occupational performance through standardised and non-standardised assessments, observation, interview with parent or carer and/or parent and teacher questionnaires.

To manage a complex clinical caseload using evidence-based practice and client-centred care, undertaking assessment, interpretation of results, goal setting, treatment and advice.

To develop, plan and implement specialist Occupational Therapy treatment programmes and strategies to enhance a child’s ability to perform everyday activities and participate in multiple environments, through verbal and written advice and recommendations, written advice sheets, individual treatment and/or group therapy.

* To have specialist knowledge of complex cases, including appeals and the tribunal process, and to be the Lead Occupational Therapist, working with the SEN Team by contributing to appeals as an expert witness where OT provision is contested, if required.
* To develop key partnerships and ensure effective whole-system working through communication and networking with other services while maintaining professional boundaries.

Qualifications

* Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
* Postgraduate qualifications in relevant areas


Professional Registration

* Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council
* Member of the specialist section: children and young people


Training

* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Evidence of attendance at training in assessment and treatment of children with functional needs
* Upper limb assessment / Interventions / splinting
* Relevant post-registration specialist education – sensory integration training levels 1 and 2


Specific Skills

* Independent management of a complex caseload within a community paediatric setting, using initiative, excellent organisation skills and the ability to prioritise workload
* Provide Education, Health and Care plan assessments, reports and reviews within statutory timeframes
* Demonstrate leadership and the ability to empower others in practice, including delegation
* Assess and analyse a child’s functional abilities using standardised and non-standardised methods
* Excellent written and verbal communication with professionals, children and parents
* Ability to provide feedback on OT assessments and interventions to parents and children with empathy and tact
* Strong knowledge of child development and related conditions and their implications for OT
* Evidence-informed practice for assessments and interventions, with occupation-based focus
* Team player with ability to support new initiatives
* Current driving licence and vehicle available for work
* Assessment and provision of specialist equipment
* Knowledge and experience of basic audit and quality tools


Experience

* Previous experience in community/NHS paediatric practice
* Demonstrated expertise in the clinical area with postgraduate experience
* Experience in EHC reports assessment and provision
* Child-centred practice and goal setting with families and schools
* Understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and related legislation
* Experience of partnership working for whole-system outcomes
* Experience managing complex caseloads
* Experience in assessment, planning and delivering occupation-focused interventions for children with complex needs
* Experience with equipment assessment and prescription in paediatric settings
* Experience leading within multi-professional teams
* Experience supervising staff and students as part of fieldwork education
* Experience in setting up new projects or initiatives
* Experience attending EHC panels
* Knowledge of national policies and safeguarding related to paediatric OT
* Experience in presenting or facilitating workshops for parents and professionals
* Experience in specialist school provision
