Responsibilities
* Work closely with the current 6 Upper Limb Surgeons, providing comprehensive cover for Upper Limb Elective and Trauma conditions.
* Schedule to start August 2026 with a fixed‑term tenure of 6–12 months, working primarily with Mr. Wijeratna and Mr. Jepson.
* Conduct outpatient clinics (elective and trauma), seeing new and follow‑up patients under consultant supervision and independently.
* Coordinate the upper‑limb trauma service, liaising with consultants and trauma coordinators to prioritize and prepare patients for surgery.
* Assist in operating theatres, conducting parallel operating lists as appropriate, with a timetable of 2–3 operating lists and 2–3 clinics per week.
* Supervise and train foundation doctors, core trainees and middle‑grade registrars in day‑to‑day management of upper‑limb conditions.
* Daily review of upper‑limb inpatients and present monthly mortality & morbidity statistics.
* Participate in departmental teaching meetings and provide teaching to staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff.
* Prepare to undertake management duties within the department and the Trust.
* Not expected to be part of the middle‑grade on‑call rota.
Person Specification
Essential
* Completion of CCT, with FRCS (Orth) exam passed.
* Minimum 6 years of specialist trainee experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics, including at least 12 months in the subspecialty of shoulder and upper‑limb surgery.
* 12 months experience in upper‑limb surgery.
* FRCS (Trauma + Orthopaedics).
* Wide range of experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics; full registration with the UK GMC.
* Research relevant to trauma and orthopaedics; ability to appraise scientific literature critically.
* Evidence of teaching at undergraduate/ postgraduate level.
* Effective participation in audit (including Trauma & Elective).
* Capacity to guard against errors, report and learn from incidents.
Desirable
* Publication(s) in peer‑reviewed journals.
* CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
* Broad experience in general trauma provision.
* Completion of 12 months Upper‑limb Fellowship.
* Post‑graduate teaching qualification.
