Overview
We are working with a Tier 1 contractor based near Reading to recruit a Regional Design Manager to join the team.
The company is a national brand with an excellent reputation in their chosen marketplace. They maintain long-term relationships with clients, subcontractors and the wider supply chain and have a forward-thinking approach to staff engagement. There are opportunities to grow and develop your career with them.
The regional office is based near Reading but the geographical area covers the M4 Corridor including Reading and Oxford, focusing on education, public sector, leisure and commercial marketplaces. They target work in both negotiated and framework opportunities. Turnover for 2025 and 2026 has been secured and 2027/28 is almost there, so they are now highly selective about the work they pursue.
Current live projects include new-build NHS and student schemes in Oxford, SEN schools, Life Sciences schemes, office and local authority developments ranging from £25 to £90 million on JCT and NEC forms of contract.
Responsibilities
The role of Regional Design Manager is to work on the longer-term strategic direction of the business alongside the Precon Director, Commercial Director and Regional Director and shape the future of the business.
You will be responsible for looking after a team of 10 design managers and their duties, which include early involvement at tender and bid stage, working with estimating and commercial teams to conduct detailed forensic investigations into the scheme, and working on the key packages to explore and identify opportunities and potential issues with critical pathways. You will carry out value engineering exercises where needed and use your skills and expertise to create detailed input for the tender and bid packages.
You will manage the information flow between client, consultants, subcontractors and your internal teams, taking the lead on framework schemes. You will oversee the teams as they take the scheme from tender and bid through detailed second-stage works, contract award, and onto site for the construction phase.
You will manage and implement the design teams on site, who will support the project manager and site delivery teams and subcontractors. You will be responsible for overseeing RFIs, change processes, CDM regulations, and other contractual matters through to handover and commissioning.
You will be responsible for training and development of your team, recruitment, reviews, targets and staff appraisals.
Qualifications
Ideally you will have worked for a Tier 1 or larger regional contractor on schemes above £10 million and have experience of both design and build (D&B) projects and framework negotiations. You must demonstrate excellent work practices, attention to detail, organisational skills and the ability to identify opportunities and potential issues.
