Structural Engineering Apprentice

We're looking for bright and committed individuals who will bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader and transform the construction and engineering industry.   

Role Overview

A Structural Engineering Apprentice is responsible for production of calculations and associated sketches for a diverse range of precast elements, as well as the provision of buildability, construction methodology and value engineering advice for live projects and tenders, as required by the business.

They work within the Centre of Excellence for Modern Methods of Construction for the Design Centre team in Worksop under the guidance of Senior Engineers.

Structural Engineers are part of the Engineering Job Family and Technical Function, which is there to ensure technical excellence, assurance and performance across all projects and opportunities from pre-project, early engagement and work winning through to detailed delivery. All of our engineers are part of our Engineering Enterprise and are aligned with our overall strategy to maximise DFMA, Digital Engineering, and Early Engagement.

You will receive the appropriate on and off the job training to allow you to become an experienced Laing O'Rourke engineer.

Key Deliverables and Accountabilities of a Structural Engineering Apprentice  

* Work closely with the Senior Engineers to produce calculations, ensuring safety in design and good practice.
* Preparation of sketches/drawings communicate designs.
* Preparing engineered solutions to latest Eurocodes and relevant industry guidance.
* Ensure company QA procedures are followed.
* Computer literate (MS Office including MS Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint, PDF Editors).

Apprenticeship Provider 

Laing O'Rourke collaborate with trusted and approved training providers for our apprenticeship delivery. Successful candidates will be required to make an application to our preferred provider for the apprenticeship route you have chosen.    

Apprenticeship level and standard  

Level 4, apprenticeship  Civil engineering senior technician / Skills England  

Laing O'Rourke collaborates with trusted and approved training providers, usually a university, to deliver our apprenticeship programmes. The allocation of a training provider will be based on academic grades achieved. 

Upon completion of the level 4 apprenticeship, you would then typically progress to a level 6 apprenticeship, with a typical duration of 5-6 years.

Entry requirements  

To be considered applicants must:   

* 4 GCSEs at C/4+, including Maths & English  
* Be working towards or achieved 3 A Level's at grades of ABB (128 UCAS points). A Levels must include Maths and a Science Subject (preferably Physics) OR  
* BTEC Extended Diploma in a construction related subject (Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction and Built Environment etc) working towards or achieved grades of DMM. Modules studied must include ‘Further Engineering Mathematics' and preferably ‘Calculus to solve Engineering problems' OR  
* IB Math's HL5 and another science subject HL5 OR  
* T level in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing – Distinction

* Have strong numeracy and literacy skills    
* Be flexible as you may be required to work away        
* Be eligible to work in the UK

* Online Assessment  You will complete a series of assessments designed to understand how you approach workplace situations, your preferred ways of working, as well as exercises to evaluate your critical thinking and numerical reasoning skills. 
* Video Interview  At this stage, you will be invited to record responses to two questions set by our hiring team. You will have sufficient time to prepare and ensure you present yourself confidently. 
* Assessment Centre  Our in-person assessment centres, held at a LOR office, provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills through a combination of individual tasks, short interviews, and group activities. This is also a chance to experience our culture first-hand. 
* Outcome  We aim to provide feedback and communicate the outcome of your assessment centre within two weeks.
