This role is within the Health Protection in Regions Directorate, part of the Chief Medical Advisor's Group of UKHSA, delivering expert health protection services locally, nationally, and globally through collaboration and data sharing.
Field Services Division
The Division provides a geographically dispersed, comprehensive service integrating epidemiology, microbiology, data science, and public health capacity to deliver disease surveillance, intelligence, and outbreak response. It supports evidence translation into practice and strengthens disease surveillance through partnerships with the NHS, academia, and other stakeholders.
Main duties of the job
Consultant in Public Health Infection
In each UKHSA region, the CPHI works with health protection teams to deliver high-quality health protection services, supporting outbreak responses, microbiology advice, and laboratory services. The role involves maintaining stakeholder relationships within UKHSA and externally with NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, and other partners, forming a national CPHI network that promotes collaboration and consistency.

Job responsibilities
1. Act as a key member of the multidisciplinary team delivering outbreak detection, prevention, and control across the region and nationally if required.
2. Provide strategic leadership for the provision and commissioning of public health microbiology and infection services within the allocated budget, in collaboration with relevant partners.
3. Serve as the scientific and clinical interface with regional laboratory services, including NHS and independent providers, with expertise in diagnostic microbiology and infectious diseases.
4. Offer specialist advice on prevention and control of public health infections across the region.
5. Support local health protection teams in delivering the HCAI/AMR agenda, including peer review and strategic advice.
6. Provide expert advice on infections of public health interest, such as gastrointestinal, vaccine-preventable, and respiratory diseases.
7. Contribute to training and supervision of trainees and promote public health infection training across the NHS regionally.
8. Assist in succession planning to develop the FS CPHI team to meet future demands.
9. Lead research and development efforts in public health infection, fostering partnerships with academic centres and UKHSA units.
10. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure surveillance systems are effective and support data interpretation for outbreak investigations.
11. Lead efforts with NHS microbiology providers to promote standards, reporting, and infection control practices.
12. Represent the FS in national discussions with government departments and agencies as needed.
13. Support clinical governance and participate in audits.

This role involves hybrid working based at Rivergate, Bristol, with a minimum of 60% of hours in the office.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* FRCPath and/or MRCP (or equivalent) and MBBS or equivalent, or PhD/clinical scientist registration.
* Full GMC registration or HCPC registration as Clinical Scientist.
* For medical applicants, CCT or evidence of nearing CCT; non-UK trained applicants must demonstrate equivalence.
Knowledge and Experience
* Active CPD participation, recent hospital microbiology/infection experience, expertise in IPC, microbiology management, policy development, and research.
Skills / Capabilities / Behaviours
* Excellent communication, partnership, leadership, and decision-making skills; ability to work under pressure; motivated to progress; collaborative working skills.
