SHAWBIRCH MEDICAL CENTRE is at an exciting period in the practice's history, having moved into a new state-of-the-art medical centre and healthy lifestyle hub. We are looking to recruit a caring, compassionate, and experienced Practice Nurse to join our established nursing team. We are open to considering applications from candidates seeking full-time or part-time positions.
Working alongside our current nursing team, which includes 3 treatment room nurses, a nursing associate, and a healthcare assistant, the successful applicant will be responsible for delivering practice nursing services to our patient population of 16,000.
Main duties of the job
We seek an experienced practice nurse with a strong foundation in a primary care setting. Our team is hardworking and friendly, committed to delivering excellent patient care.
The role includes standard treatment room duties such as wound care, cytology, and chronic disease management, as well as administering childhood immunisations, travel advice, and vaccinations. The nurse will also support the nursing, clinical, and management teams in achieving QOF targets.

We are a dedicated, friendly, innovative training practice with a team comprising 6 GP Partners, 1 ANP Partner, 5 salaried GPs, 1 Registrar, 5 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 3 Practice Nurses, 1 Nurse Associate, and 1 HCA, working alongside reception and administrative staff.

Job responsibilities
Job Title: Practice Nurse
Reports to: ANP Partner/GP Partners (Clinically), Practice Manager (Administratively)
Hours: Up to full-time hours
Professional/Clinical
* Provide holistic travel health advice, including vaccinations, medicines, safe sex, food hygiene, and sun protection
* Advise on childhood and adult vaccinations, participate in vaccination programmes including influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal, and shingles, ensuring vaccines are administered per current guidelines
* Undertake home visits for vaccinating housebound patients
* Administer prescribed injections such as vitamin B12, zoladex, prostap, and contraceptive injections
* Run health promotion programmes, offering holistic assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, smoking, alcohol, and exercise
* Assess problems presented opportunistically by patients
* Document consultations according to NMC guidelines
* Follow statutory and local clinical protection procedures, including recognizing signs of child abuse
* Perform assessments for ear wax removal and cervical cytology tests
* Conduct basic pill checks for oral contraceptive users
* Perform venepuncture and routine laboratory tests, including genital swabs
* Manage wound care, including ABPI assessments and compression hosiery application
* Assess and treat minor injuries, burns, and wounds; refer complex cases as per protocols
* Remove sutures and wound clips; coil removal after training
* Take ECGs and recognize/manage anaphylaxis and perform CPR according to UK guidelines
* Assist with minor surgeries, coil and contraceptive implant insertions
* Obtain and document informed consent
* Educate patients on managing long-term conditions such as Diabetes, Asthma/COPD, and CHD, and conduct hypertension monitoring
* Complete health checks for patients on learning disability or mental health registers, liaising with GPs
* Maintain infection control standards
* Monitor and manage stock and equipment, including vaccinations
* Undertake other delegated tasks
* Maintain confidentiality at all times
Managerial
* Assess service needs and assist patients in identifying their health needs
* Contribute to practice development plans from a nursing perspective
* Manage individual patient consultations
* Attend staff meetings and maintain effective communication with other agencies

Health & Safety
The post-holder will lead on health and safety and infection control, including:
* Using security systems and following infection control standards
* Managing specimens, PPE, hand hygiene, and infection control protocols

* Participating in infection control training and audits
* Managing waste, spillage, decontamination, and maintaining sterile environments
The post-holder will participate in training and annual performance reviews, taking responsibility for their professional development.
Person Specification
Knowledge and skills
* Registered General Nurse with a diploma or higher qualification
* Fundamentals of Practice Nursing qualification desirable
* Experience working in primary care, familiar with EMIS web and Microsoft Office
* Experience with the public and leadership skills
* Competent in basic nursing duties and specific skills such as vaccinations, wound care, and managing long-term conditions
* Strong communication, confidentiality, judgment, and teamwork skills
* Flexible working hours and willingness to work at varied times
