The Band 7 Vascular Sonographer will be an experienced and highly skilled autonomous practitioner working within the Vascular Science and Non-Invasive Diagnostics Service at Southampton General Hospital. The post-holder will provide expert diagnostic vascular ultrasound services to support the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with a wide range of arterial, venous, and cerebrovascular conditions.
As a key member of a large ultrasound department the Band 7 Sonographer will independently perform and interpret a comprehensive portfolio of vascular examinations, including carotid duplex, lower- and upper-limb arterial and venous studies, aneurysm surveillance, bypass graft assessment, mesenteric, arterial studies and emergency/rapid-access scans in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The role requires high-level clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary vascular team consisting of vascular surgeons, radiologists, vascular scientists, nurses, and specialist practitioners. The post-holder will contribute to service development, quality assurance, audit, and training of junior staff, trainees, and students, helping to maintain the department’s reputation as a centre of excellence.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Undertake a highly specialised clinical caseload of patients to aid in patient assessment and diagnosis, adapting techniques to optimise image quality and diagnostic yield.
* Interpret ultrasound images to provide independent written examination reports and referrals and recommendations for further assessment based on findings.
* Communicate effectively with patients regarding diagnostic tests, explaining clinical implications and outcomes and deal appropriately with complex, sensitive or contentious information, obtaining informed verbal consent.
* Contribute to policy implementation and service evaluation to develop services to address rapid advances in imaging technology.
* Ensure adherence and propose changes to standards and policies for clinical practice to ensure a coordinated and effective service. This includes infection prevention.
* Act as an active member of the multidisciplinary team advising on onward patient management whilst providing the highest standards of patient care.
* Be responsible for keeping accurate and timely written and electronic patient records and statistical information.
Person Specification – Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential Criteria
* Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound
* Appropriate Professional Registration e.g. HCPC, RCT or NMC Registration
* Appropriate relevant Degree or equivalent
* Appropriate post qualification experience in an ultrasound department
* Relevant clinical courses
* Completed the preceptorship and capability framework for sonographers’
* Quality assurance supervision and practice
* Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling
* Experience of teaching, mentoring and supporting colleagues training and development
* Be able to interpret clinician’s requirements, recognise the urgency of ultrasound requests, prioritise requests and determine the appropriate scanning technique, ensuring that scans are performed in accordance with best practice and research-based evidence
* To interpret scans and provide a comprehensive, independent, diagnostic report on the patient’s condition and make the appropriate diagnosis
* Leadership or management course or qualification or equivalent experience
* To be able to respond appropriately to distressed patients and staff and distressing circumstances e.g. suspected physical abuse, major trauma, cancer and death
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of presenting or publishing local audit, research, or case studies
* Trained and experienced in more than one area of ultrasound
