Job overview

An exciting new role has become available for a permanent Ward Manager for ward 2a Neurosurgery within the Neurosurgical Department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. We are looking for a resilient and enthusiastic individual who can provide leadership and management of a busy Neurosurgical Ward and who can champion the vision and values of the Trust. The ward consists of 17 bed including 10 level 1 high care beds.

Within this leadership role you will need passion and drive to lead and develop a team of nurses who provide the highest quality care to their patients. Working clinically alongside your staff on the ward you will provide clear senior presence and visibility. You will champion the Trust values and have the courage to challenge poor practice but also celebrate success with your team.

You will be expected to both manage the ward effectively and provide clinical leadership to the nursing staff. By being a positive role model you will ensure delivery of an efficient, safe and high quality care is given to all patients on the ward.

Main duties of the job

You must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a unit in an effective and efficient manner. You will be a clinical role model and have a willingness to develop the team as well as your own professional growth. You will have excellent communication skills and high clinical standards with a passion to make a difference for patients and staff alike.

You must have recent experience of working in a senior nurse role within Neurosurgery and must be able to demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in caring for patients. You will be knowledgeable regarding the speciality, plus fully understand governance and its importance in promoting and maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff and proactively monitor and feedback compliance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Is responsible for the provision of Excellent Care with Compassion.

(NB Where the phrase ‘all patients’ or ‘patients’ is mentioned: for patients who lack capacity please substitute Next of Kin or advocate)

Is responsible for ensuring that the nursing team and care support team are adequately resourced and organised in order to deliver excellent care with compassion.

Is responsible for ensure the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion.

Is responsible for leading and developing the ward nursing team and the ward administration and support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential.

Is responsible for ensuring the productive operation of the ward through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment and by using processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients.

Safeguards people and promotes equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

1. Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role e.g. IV medications, Cannulation
2. Ability to Implement changes within nursing practice
3. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
4. Evidence of clinical competence in area of Neurosurgery
5. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
6. Knowledge of ethical issues
7. Knowledge of roster management.

Desirable criteria

8. Experience of budgetary management
9. Evidence of working at Band 7
10. Knowledge of the PDPR Process
11. Experience of managing a clinical area

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

12. Appropriate NMC Registration
13. Mentorship qualification
14. Post Registration Qualifications relevant to the role
15. Diploma in Nursing
16. Evidence of Education to Degree Level
17. Successful completion of a leadership and development programme equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme

Desirable criteria

18. Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent
19. Nursing Degree
20. Knowledge of continuous improvement methodology.
