Job Summary

Are you a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist with a special interest and enhanced skill set in the clinical area of Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs? Do you routinely promote and share good practice with SaLT colleagues and partners?

We have an opportunity for a dynamic Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and forward-thinking community team, acting as an Advanced Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in Social, Emotional, and Mental Health.

We deliver clinical excellence through evidence-based practice. We offer a friendly and supportive working environment with a strong emphasis on CPD through access to specialist clinical support, sharing good practice and effective team working.

It’s an exciting time for the SaLT service! We have just started our third year of delivering an integrated SaLT service within a Balanced System framework. We’re working in partnership with families, the Local Authority, individual schools and a wide range of stakeholders to deliver interventions at Universal, Targeted and Specialist levels.


Main duties of the job

You will provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, within the clinical area of SEMH, functioning in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people with SEMH needs.

You will provide highly specialist clinical supervision to colleagues working with clients with SEMH needs. You will have a strong understanding of the benefits of receiving and providing supervision for the client group, focusing on both clinical skills and emotional well-being.

You will represent the clinical area in all appropriate meetings to support and develop quality services for this population of children across the city in an integrated partnership model, where possible.

You will be part of the service level management team shaping the direction of the SaLT service in Birmingham.

You will support the staff in your team to work in ways which optimise impact and deliver on outcomes.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

A breakdown of the post is as follows:

1. 1 day per week dedicated time for Advanced Specialist role in SEMH: delivering activities which contribute to maintenance of safe, effective clinical practice for children with speech, language and communication needs in the context of SEMH needs.
2. Supporting and developing SaLT staff to gain skills and knowledge within the clinical area of SEMH, providing clinical supervision and highly specialist support.

Additional protected time to support the oversight of SaLT support to children and young people who are out of school, including further development of the service and developing links with other relevant agencies.

You will also be working with clients with a range of Speech Language and Communication needs across a range of settings. See JD for further details.


Person Specification

Essential

* Qualifications: First degree level qualification, relevant to service area
* HCPC Licence to practice
* Full Membership of Professional body, relevant to service area
* Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area, including accessing relevant clinical supervision
* Relevant training in specialist area (e.g., postgraduate dysphagia qualification, Sensory Integration, neurological rehabilitation)
* Relevant training in clinical leadership

Desirable

* Masters postgraduate qualification, relevant to service area

Experience

* Extensive experience of diagnostic assessment and intervention in specialist area of service
* Extensive experience of working as a specialist therapist with children and families in a range of multi-disciplinary and/or multi-agency teams in Local Authority and Health settings
* Extensive experience of managing a mixed and complex caseload of children and young people with a range of developmental disorders and delays
* Significant experience of managing safeguarding concerns and an understanding of local processes
* Relevant experience of using leadership skills for service development
* Significant experience in providing support and supervision to colleagues and other professionals
* Extensive experience of providing complex written and verbal information to others to a high standard
* Significant experience of delivering successful/effective training to a range of qualified professionals in the area of specialism

Skills

* Knowledge of the national and political agenda influencing health services and specific service area
* Competent in using electronic systems relevant to practice in the Trust and in the clinical area
* Competent in using highly developed negotiation and influencing skills with evident clinical leadership
* Competent in explaining complex ideas in a simple way, using highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
