Senior Site Reliability / GitOps Engineer – Canonical

We are hiring for the Information Systems (IS) team. The SRE & GitOps role is automation‑first and focuses on Linux, IaC, and cloud environments.
Job Summary
The IS team maintains all Canonical’s IT production services, supporting over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a senior SRE & GitOps engineer, you will drive operations automation across private and public clouds, develop IaC, and collaborate on open‑source product feedback.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development of automation and GitOps as an embedded tech lead.
* Collaborate with the IS architect to align solutions with the architecture vision.
* Design services that the IS team can offer to the organization as products.
* Implement IaC practices, continually improving automation and IaC processes.
* Automate software operations for re‑usability and consistency across clouds.
* Maintain operational responsibility for Canonical’s core services, networks, and infrastructure.
* Setup and maintain observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch) and monitoring/alerting.
* Assist and work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support peers.
* Allocate uninterrupted development time for large projects and task automation.
* Menteship and share best practices in design sessions and collaborative work.
* Own time‑critical escalations.
Qualifications
* Strong background in hosting architecture, driven by IaC across private and public clouds.
* Product mindset focused on product development.
* Python software development experience with large projects.
* Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration.
* Proven ability to deploy cloud infrastructure with code.
* Knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls, storage (Ceph, databases).
* Hands‑on administration of enterprise Linux servers.
* Deep knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
* Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field.
* Excellent communication skills in English.
* Able to troubleshoot from kernel to web and seek help when needed.
* Flexible, quick learner, thrives in fast‑changing environments.
* Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
