Offer description

Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Clinical Fellow in Breast Surgery to work with our friendly and proactive expanding team.

This is a 1-year fixed term, full-time post of 40 hours per week with no out-of-hours on‑call commitments. The successful candidate is expected to work independently with own clinics and theatre sessions, progressing toward a fully independent practice with consultant support as needed.

Department

The department offers a full service of screening and symptomatic breast cancer care, with access to a complete range of radiological support including MRI, biopsy and AI diagnostic facilities. The theatre suite provides all facilities to support a whole range of oncoplastic breast surgery – from localisation of non‑palpable lesions to various oncoplastic techniques and reconstructions – with full support from microsurgery colleagues in plastic surgery.

The department is part of the North East of Scotland Training program, providing full training support and facilities across a complex of hospitals.

Active trial recruitment and research projects are ongoing, together with a comprehensive teaching programme.

Responsibilities

* Provide flexible coverage in the new patient one‑stop clinic, review clinics and inpatient cover.
* Take on-call duties during working hours for breast abscess referrals and referrals from other specialties, with responsibility shared among middle–grade doctors.
* Assist in regular theatre sessions and, based on experience, conduct independent sessions to develop skills in breast cancer surgery toward independent practice.
* Participate in the weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) and screening clinic, and assist consultant colleagues with result clinics when they have other commitments or are on leave.

Qualifications and Development

Candidates working toward higher exams, CESR and having special development requirements are encouraged to discuss their plans early with the head of department to facilitate progress.

* Regular teaching and training session attendance.
* Involvement in quality improvement (QI) projects.
* Participation in morbidity & mortality (M&M) and continuing medical education (CME) activities.

Training and Educational Status

Appointments to this post do not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised by the Deanery for training, although they provide excellent clinical experience.

Registration

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. The licence must be in place prior to starting in post.

Employment Notice

Please note that this post may close early if we receive a large volume of applications.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As a disability‑confident employer we are committed to ensuring our recruitment processes are inclusive and accessible to all. If you need adjustments during the recruitment process, please let us know by contacting our recruitment team.
