Specialist Radiographer

Using knowledge and competences demonstrated since qualification and as a Band 6 radiographer in the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, carry out all clinical duties required during cardiac invasive procedures, providing specialist radiological clinical technical services.
Working within a multidisciplinary, sterile environment with highly sophisticated, specialised equipment, the responsibilities include patient care, positioning, acquisition, manipulation and archiving of radiographic images. The procedure requires quick and efficient imaging to demonstrate required anatomy in a rapid sequence of projections.
Procedures involve a wide range of expensive, sterile consumables, and detailed knowledge of these is required. The radiographer is expected to advise Specialist Registrars on appropriate equipment selection such as catheters to facilitate the procedure.
Cardiac angiography procedures are high‑dose examinations; the radiographer is a highly trained expert in radiation protection, minimising dose to patient, operator and staff.
Responsibilities
* Provide patient care, positioning, acquisition, manipulation and archiving of radiographic images during cardiac invasive procedures.
* Ensure rapid, efficient imaging that demonstrates required anatomy.
* Maintain and operate highly sophisticated, specialised equipment in a sterile environment.
* Advise on equipment selection and usage of sterile consumables.
* Minimise radiation dose to patients and staff in line with IRMER protocols.
* Work independently with initiative while operating radiographic equipment.
* Maintain calm under pressure in an unpredictable work pattern.
* Apply comprehensive knowledge of adult cardiac anatomy and function.
* Demonstrate manual dexterity and organisational time‑management skills.
* Flexibly meet the demands of the service, including prolonged standing and radiation PPE use.
* Assist in training, supervision and support of junior colleagues.
Qualifications & Training
* Diploma of the College of Radiographers or BSc Radiography
* HCPC registration as a radiographer
* Immediate Life Support Course
Knowledge & Skills
* Practical knowledge and experience of vascular or interventional cardiac radiological procedures.
* Advanced understanding of the physiological, psychological and social needs of critically ill cardiac patients.
* Knowledge of Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations (IRMER) protocols and the Professional Code of Conduct.
Experience
* Clinical experience with a range of vascular procedures and fluoroscopy equipment.
