Abatec Recruitment is delighted to be working with a well-established engineering firm nestled in within the Mendip Hills who are looking to expand their engineering team with a Machine Shop Lead. The lead will ensure the assigned work is completed in a timely manner, this includes assigning and explaining daily tasks to Machinists, monitoring work progress and compliance with policies and
procedures; training and assisting Machinists.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise and train personnel in machine operations and workshop safety.
* Plan and coordinate workflow to meet production and customer requirements.
* Manage resources efficiently (labour, materials, and machinery) for cost-effective output.
* Review technical drawings (including CAD) to ensure correct setup and machining processes.
* Operate and program CNC and manual machines (lathes, pillar drills).
* Monitor and adjust machines for optimal performance, ensuring output meets specifications.
* Perform quality checks, maintain production records, and oversee maintenance of machinery.
* Uphold safety standards and enforce discipline, attendance, and timekeeping.
* Support Workshop Manager with shift coverage, callouts, and overtime as required.
Skills & Experience
* Proven experience as a machinist and supervisor in a machine shop environment.
* Skilled in CNC and manual machining, precision measurement (calipers, micrometers, verniers).
* Strong understanding of ferrous, non-ferrous, and plastic materials.
* Experienced in reading blueprints and interpreting mechanical drawings.
* Competent in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
* Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
* Knowledge of speeds, feeds, and safety protocols (PPE compliance).
