Stoke Mandeville Hospital supports the emergency surgical pathway within BHT, the surgical floor facilitates multiple surgical disciplines from initial assessment and triage in the Surgical Assessment Unit to diagnosis and treatment across the remaining surgical wards.
As a surgical floor we are looking to establish an enhanced care bay as part of the surgical floor footprint; we work closely with our critical care colleagues to ensure that acute surgical care is delivered in a safe and effective manner.

This is a full-time position (37.5hrs a week), but flexible working would be considered as long as needs of service are met.
Main duties of the job
The ward manager is expected to provide senior clinical leadership and supervision to a specific clinical function / department. They will be expected to directly manage and be accountable for the allocated human and physical resources for that area, maintaining and working within the allocated financial budget. The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the overall safety and management of the ward / department 24 / 7 ensuring plans are in place to maintain the provision of the service and to provide quality care.
The ward manager will need to provide specialist clinical knowledge and expertise in their related field. They will lead the team to provide qualitative, productive, safe evidenced based nursing care and therapy which promotes best practice and best outcomes for patients.
The ward manager will work in collaboration with the matron to look at new and innovative ways of providing positive patient and staff experience. This will be demonstrated with the patient and staff experience feedback questionnaires.
Outcomes will be based on direct and indirect patient feedback, audits both internal and external, peer reviews, matron’s rounds and corporate quality targets for both patients and staff. Please see attached Job Description for more detailed information.

Experience
Essential criteria
11. Significant experience at a band 6 level within the NHS
12. Previous experience in teaching, coaching, mentoring
Desirable criteria
13. Proven track record in change management, team leadership and performance management
Education, Qualificaiton & Training
Essential criteria
14. Good general education
15. Registered Nurse (Level 1)/ Qualified Physiotherapist / Occupational Therapist
16. Degree related to field (or equivalent experience)
17. Teaching and Assessment recognised qualification
18. Recognised advanced communication skills
Desirable criteria
19. Completion of appropriate management and leadership programme
