Responsibilities
* Provide specialist nursing care to patients with mental health conditions or psychological distress.
* Deliver therapeutic interventions to reduce agitation and distress and promote recovery.
* Identify factors that increase or decrease agitation/distress for the patient.
* Deliver care according to the principles of least restriction.
* Carry out assigned tasks as part of a clinical team in support of registered nurses and undertake aspects of care provision without direct supervision.
* Ensure the safety and well-being of service users, promoting dignity and human rights through person-centered care.
* Work with patients admitted to the ward as a member of the multidisciplinary team, delivering high standard of evidence-based care to maximise each patient’s potential.
* Assess, develop, implement and evaluate care in conjunction with the Psychiatric Liaison Team.
* Deliver care planned by clinicians or Registered Nurses and take appropriate action to achieve outcomes.
* Be competent, confident and adaptable with minimal supervision from registered professionals.
* Contribute to the efficient running of the department and ensure patients and families are seen in a timely manner.
Therapeutic Approach
To therapeutically engage with patients who have mental health conditions or psychological distress; deliver care in line with the principles of least restriction and in accordance with national guidelines including NICE for managing disturbed behaviour; understand continuous risk assessment and escalate risk as needed; identify when patients are experiencing anxiety/distress and engage to alleviate these symptoms; identify escalation of risk and actively de-escalate the situation.
Clinical Practice
Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties to deliver agreed plans of care, acting on own initiative; ensure patients receive high-quality clinical care and good patient experience, respecting their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines; act as an advocate for patients within the department to ensure a patient-centered approach and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines; provide support and assistance to professionals in the implementation of plans of care for individual patients; collect specimens from patients as directed and record routine observations, reporting abnormalities to a Registered Nurse.
