Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) is pleased to offer fully funded sponsorship opportunities for qualified nurses and midwives to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) – School Nursing qualification (Level 7) and develop their career as a School Nurse.
Contract: fixed‑term 12 months (short term contract). Hours: full time – 37.5 hours per week. Location: Kaleidoscope Town, London. Salary: £36,087 per annum plus HCAS (Annex 21). Closing date: 01/06/2026.
Applicants must be NMC‑registered nurses or midwives, hold a Level 6 qualification (minimum 2:1), have completed recent study at Level 7 within the past two years, and be able to commence the programme in September 2026 at King’s College London.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
The role offers an excellent opportunity to gain specialist public health knowledge, leadership skills and practical experience within a supportive learning environment. It is a 50/50 split between university‑based study and practical, community‑based experience.
Key responsibilities include:
* Delivering and supporting School Health Community Public Health Nursing services.
* Applying knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme.
* Addressing public health needs and wider determinants of health.
* Communicating effectively with colleagues, families and multidisciplinary teams.
* Working autonomously while contributing to a team environment.
* Managing complex and distressing situations with professionalism and compassion.
* Leading and making informed decisions.
* Managing academic commitments alongside practical duties.
* Engaging in reflective learning and self‑improvement.
Interview Structure
Shortlisted candidates will participate in a two‑part interview process:
* Group discussion on an unseen topic or question.
* Individual panel interview with a short 5‑minute presentation at the beginning.
Eligibility Criteria & Requirements
* Current NMC registration for nursing or midwifery, or evidence of application with confirmed registration within 2 months of the start date.
* BSc degree (or above) equivalent to 360 credits at level 6, or evidence of previous education and learning to this level.
* Postgraduate Diploma Route: a 2:1 Honours Degree is required.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery, or evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed registration within 2 months of the start date.
* DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5, or evidence of previous education and learning to this level.
* Evidence of continual professional development at level 6.
* Degree.
Fitness to Practice
* Up to date and fit to practice safely.
Application Completion
* All sections of the application form completed fully according to written guidelines.
Literacy and Numeracy
* Literacy at the level of the National Qualifications Framework level 3‑4 (equivalent of A‑level).
* Numeracy at the level of the National Qualifications Framework level 1‑2 (equivalent of GCSE).
Knowledge
* Knowledge of the public health role of contemporary health visiting and working in community settings.
* Knowledge of local and national policies which influence the provision of health visiting.
* Current knowledge of safeguarding issues.
* Knowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance.
Experience
* Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
* Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution.
* Experience managing staff within a team.
* Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload.
