12-Month Work Placement - Civil Engineer

Role description: Our Intern & Placement programme provides hands-on insight into the work we do and helps develop skills in your chosen field. The programme combines technical training with signposted development support aligned to Arcadis’ core values.
Role accountabilities: Our civil engineering teams work across highways, rail, energy, and water, delivering safe, high-quality, and sustainable design solutions. You will be supported and mentored while contributing to projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments. You will work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams and follow a structured path towards professional qualification.
Using advanced software and digital tools, you will design new infrastructure and assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will gain hands-on experience across sectors, learn about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints, and collaborate with other disciplines. Site visits will help ensure designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable. You will contribute to delivering resilient, low-carbon solutions that maximise environmental, social, and economic impact.
Our work covers projects of all scales across multiple sectors.
* Highways & Transportation: shaping the future of transport infrastructure with roads, junctions, bridges, and active travel routes. Design foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, or drainage; utilize tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM. Engage in transport planning, traffic modelling, and policy alignment; work with clients and stakeholders across concept to construction on UK and international projects.
* Water & Waste: work on a wide variety of water infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets to deliver sustainable solutions and ensure resilient water supplies.
* Rail: design and deliver railway infrastructure, including stations, bridges, utility crossings, drainage, and safe access. Collaborate in safety-critical environments using digital tools to develop resilient, future-ready solutions across UK and international projects including light rail and tram systems.
* Energy: support clients in delivering new connections and grid upgrades to help meet Net Zero ambitions.
Qualifications & experience:
* You will be working towards a degree in a relevant subject.
* You will demonstrate Arcadian skills including resilience, creativity, analytical thinking, and teamwork.
* You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to use technical knowledge to influence and consult stakeholders.
* Willing to travel and stay away from home where required (virtual working is embraced where possible).
