Overview

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to join a collaborative research programme investigating the role of synaptic dysfunction and impaired neurotransmission in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (ALS/FTD).

You will work within a team of two PDRAs and two senior research technicians under a 5-year MRC-funded collaborative research programme.

In this post you will lead the maintenance of curated iPSCs and the generation of iPSC‑derived neuronal cultures in which synaptic function will be examined using state‑of‑the‑art electrophysiological and microscopy‑based assays.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

* Undertake research in line with project requirements.
* To set‑up and run experiments in relation to the project in consultation with the PIs
* Manage data collection, analysis and storage on a day‑to‑day basis.
* Work independently and as part of a team to deliver the research objectives in line with the project outline.
* Direct the work of supporting technicians
* Liaise closely with other academics, advisers and administrators relevant to the study.
* Take a lead role in the analysis, interpretation and writing up of data
* Read and review literature as appropriate.
* Assist in the writing of the project reports and publications.
* Contribute to conference presentations, research advisory group meetings
* Attend and contribute to project/lab meetings and research advisory group meetings.
* Support project reporting requirements, including research project progress reports and finance management and reporting
* Contribute to the supervision and support of PhD students and MSc students working in the lab
* Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

Essential Or Desirable

* A PhD in neuroscience, molecular/cell biology or a related discipline (applicants near completion of their PhD are welcome to apply)
* Essential Application Experience working with human in vitro iPSC-based models (iPSC maintenance, deriving defined cell types from iPSCs)
* Essential Application and Interview Demonstrable experience in molecular, biochemistry and cell biology
* Essential Application and Interview Demonstrable experience in synaptic biology
* Desirable Application and Interview Demonstrable Experience In Primary Rodent (mouse/rat) Neuron Cultures
* Desirable Application and Interview Demonstrable experience in lentiviral and AAV viral vectors
* Desirable Application and Interview Demonstrable experience in assays of neuronal or synaptic function (electrophysiology, imaging (e.g., pHluorin)-based assays)
* Desirable Application and Interview Previous experience with Drosophila
* Desirable Application and Interview Experience working on neurodegenerative diseases
* Desirable Application and Interview Experience of delivering high quality research
* Essential Application and Interview
