Electrical Systems Engineer – Automotive / EV

Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Systems Engineer to support short-term delivery across system definition, supplier coordination, and validation activities within an advanced automotive or EV programme. The role focuses on system-level electrical design and integration, not hands‑on wiring or CAD, and is ideal for someone confident working between requirements, suppliers, and validation teams to maintain technical delivery and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
* Define and review electrical and functional system requirements.
* Lead supplier and cross‑functional discussions to align specifications and interfaces.
* Support system‑level integration and requirements traceability through to validation.
* Review and contribute to DFMEA, test coverage, and verification planning.
* Ensure designs comply with internal standards and functional safety principles (ISO 26262).
Ideal Profile:
* Background in automotive or EV electrical systems engineering.
* Proven experience with requirements and architecture tools (DOORS, Polarion, Jama).
* Strong understanding of E/E architectures, HV systems, BMS, or charging systems.
* Comfortable working with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers on system definition and validation.
* Pragmatic, delivery‑driven engineer able to operate with minimal onboarding.

A systems‑level thinker who can bridge hardware, software, and validation domains to ensure electrical system integrity and project continuity during a critical phase.

Job Title: Engineering Manager – Electrical Systems
Location: Barrow-in-Furness / Filton – (Hybrid – 2 days a fortnight (Barrow), 1 day a week (Filton) dependent on business needs, also a requirement to visit other sites in the UK on a regular basis)
Salary: Up to £61,967 (Commensurate with skills and experience)
What you’ll be doing:
* Leading & managing an engineering team to deliver the functional design and definition of Electrical Power Systems equipment.
* Managing the processes and reviews of technical documentation.
* Managing associated technical risks, assumptions and dependencies.
* Providing advice on electrical power technical aspects across a broad range of engineering disciplines.
* Engaging with customers and suppliers to provide solutions to complex problems.
* Taking a leading role by guiding the team through the systems definition process.
* Providing leadership and mentoring of more junior team members to ensure the necessary capability and skills development.
Your skills and experiences:
* Chartership or work (or prepared to work) towards it.
* Engineering degree or HND with substantial experience in Electrical Engineering design / development.
* Experience of design / development of power systems (concept through to detailed design).
* Significant knowledge of AC and DC electrical power systems.
* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
* Team leadership experience.
* Knowledge of defence standards.
* Experience of Marine Electrical Systems.
* Experience of working with engineering life cycle.

The Electrical Power Systems Definition team:
Working on the UK’s next‑generation SSN design that incorporates technology from the UK, Australia and the United States you will be part of the Electrical Power team who are responsible for leading a team of engineers in defining the system elements required to feed into the submarine design and build process, including design documentation, spatial modelling and build outputs. This role will provide you with an opportunity to travel to various locations throughout the UK, including various BAE, customer and supplier sites. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

They are now looking for a Senior Electrical Consulting Engineer to join their growing UK Power team and play a key role in delivering technically challenging projects across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

Role
As Senior Engineer, you will support the delivery of complex power sector projects and contribute to technical problem‑solving, design development and client advisory services. Your responsibilities will include:
* Leading and supporting electrical engineering projects across transmission and distribution networks.
* Producing and reviewing FEED studies, concept designs and technical specifications.
* Acting as Owner’s Engineer, delivering technical advisory and due‑diligence services.
* Designing cable systems, substations (grid and distribution) and specifying key electrical equipment.
* Supporting tendering, bids and proposals with technical input.
* Assisting with FAT, SAT and commissioning activities.
* Mentoring and supporting junior engineers as the team continues to grow.
About You
You’ll be a technically strong engineer with a drive to develop your consulting capabilities. You will bring:
* A degree in Electrical Engineering (BEng/BSc minimum; MEng/MSc desirable).
* Strong understanding of the UK electricity system and its regulatory environment.
* Experience in the design, operation, construction or maintenance of transmission and distribution networks.
* Knowledge of key equipment including GIS/AIS switchgear, transformers, reactive compensation, harmonic filters and power cables.
* Experience with protection & control (desirable).
* Project delivery experience, either leading or coordinating tasks.
* Site experience (FAT/SAT/commissioning) – advantageous.
* Working towards, or already holding, Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Responsibilities:
* Responsible for creating control system electrical schematics using EPLAN, ensuring accurate and efficient design documentation.
* Lead the design and development of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems for a range of engineering projects.
* Produce and review technical documentation including wiring diagrams, I/O lists, loop diagrams, control philosophies, and functional design specifications.
* Specify and select field instrumentation, control valves, analysers, and safety devices, ensuring compliance with international standards.
