Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency
We are looking for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems, control systems design and SCADA/telemetry to join our Standards and Engineering team. The role involves technical leadership, developing and maintaining engineering standards, ensuring safety, reliability and sustainability of assets, and supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce.
Responsibilities
Working within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority you will provide technical engineering leadership and support across the organisation to meet objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and net‑zero commitments. Your duties include:
* Managing, developing and maintaining electrical engineering standards, safety rules, and competency guidance for HV and LV power systems and control systems in pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures, and monitoring sites.
* Developing, delivering and maintaining competency and skills guidance for all employees working on electrical systems and equipment.
* Holding a national incident response role, which may involve out‑of‑hours duties.
Team
You will join the MEICA Engineering Standards team within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team provides technical standards, management and leadership across mechanical, electrical and control system activities and collaborates closely across the business.
Qualifications & Experience
Through experience you should be able to demonstrate most of the following:
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Control systems knowledge, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing, isolation and proving of high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance, Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.

Role Specific Licence and Professional Membership
UK driving licence.
Must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or provide evidence of working toward registration within a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.

This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home. Some travel and overnights may be required. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within three weeks of the closing date.
